Our regular Tuesday diarist had a surprise hockey event today and will return next week. I just got back from dropping K2 off for his second semester at college, and thought I’d share a bit about my day.

We live in the greater Boston area, and K2 attends Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, NY. It’s about 180 miles from us and the trip can take anywhere from 3-6 hours by car, depending on whether or not there’s traffic. This one happened to be low-traffic in both directions, so I spent about 7 hours in the car plus necessary pit stops :). Yes, he could take the train or fly, but this gives us time spent together in each direction, makes it easier, and is what we did for his older sister during her time at school.

We made a stop about an hour from our house to pick up a friend of his, and I did my very best Ignoring The Conversation impression while they sat in the back seat and chatted. Spoiler, I’m pretty terrible at it. It was really interesting hearing my usually quiet kid happily talking about life, classes, places in NYC he wants to visit, friend drama, and other conversational topics. His friend was really nice and I’m glad he’s got such people in his life.

After getting him settled with all his stuff — clothes he brought home, a new turntable (yes, actual records!!) and cooking supplies since he has access to a kitchen in his suite, I took he and another friend to Target to pick up things they left at home, and dropped them back. We have as our cover image the obligatory Walking To The Dorm photo. I had a quick uneventful drive home, and sat down at 9pm Eastern to write this.

He had a spectacular first semester and I can’t wait to see how this one goes. We’ll see him for March break, then home for the summer UNLESS he snags an internship in NY. I’ll keep you posted! All in all this was a wonderful way to try to avoid news… I listened to NPR for an hour on the drive back, but did a reasonable job keeping the existential dread at bay for most of a day! Let’s head to tonight’s Tops and tell me how YOU fared today!
