The Trump five minute rule [1]

When I retired in 2016, I moved to Kansas City. I did not want to die in the town 50 miles east of Kansas City that I had lived in for 26 years.
I met a bicycle group of retirees and started bicycling around 100 miles a week. I had started bicycling in 1972. After my first marriage ended, I saved money and went to Europe. I bicycled with a group of French from Paris to Warsaw and returned by way of Finland. . The following year I bicycled from Paris to Athens on my own. That year I met my wife bicycling across the south of France.
Bicycling has kept me sane and I have found a great group of friends. Our destinations are always locally-owned coffee houses and craft breweries. I have read one of the great problems retirees have is not socializing with peer groups. With bicycling, that is not an issue for me.
Almost everyone I ride with are Democrats and staunchly anti-Republican and even more staunchly anti-Trump. (I know of one MAGA; he hasn’t shown up in several months.) Since November 5th, initial conversations have been about the latest outrages of Trump and his minions.
In the past month, when we get together and share our outrage at the latest Trump stunts, but after about ten minutes, people say “enough.” Today, no one revealed they had watched the events in DC on Monday. After five minutes of the outrageous things we had read, like the past month or so, my friends said, “Enough, no more mention of Trump.” Trump was no longer mentioned.
(We are in Kansas City, so it is easy to talk about the cold weather, the Chiefs, the possibility of the Chiefs’ threepeat, and the stupidity of those who think the refs are deliberately making calls guaranteeing a Chiefs victory.)
I expect the five minute rule of no mention of Trump and his actions will be observed among my friends for awhile.
