This is a good article detailing what is going on in Belarus, where presidential elections are to be held this weekend. I wonder who will win. Oh, the suspense is killing me. 😅
Here is how it sums up:
Viachaslau Korosten, a columnist for Pozirk, predicts that after the election, Lukashenko will continue efforts to “turn the page” and restore his legitimacy in the eyes of the West — if not through formal recognition of the election results, then at least through practical steps like re-establishing diplomatic ties or resuming trade. However, his chances of success seem slim. Lukashenko remains deeply reliant on Moscow (and sources tell Meduza that these “brotherly ties” are likely to grow even closer) and is unwilling to end his campaign of repression. “In a way, it’s rational,” Korosten writes. “Since 2020, Lukashenko has resolved none of the conflicts between himself and the protesters. He has made no concessions, no gestures of goodwill. On the contrary — he responded with violence, deepening the antagonism.” Political analyst Artyom Shraibman argues that Lukashenko has yet to mentally recover “from the trauma of 2020” and that, as long as he remains in power, the climate in Belarus will not grow any freer.
It seems I have something in common with this Russian general — I don’t expect anything good from Trump either.
x Lieutenant General Viktor Sobolev, a member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee, has repeatedly commented on Donald Trump and his policies.
And it seems that this old man is not very happy with the new US president.

x ⚡️Europe must become stronger in face of Russian hostility, Zelensky says. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos on Jan. 21, urging Europe to take charge of its own security amid escalating Russian threats. kyivindependent.com/europe-must-...

x Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky really hammered Europe in his Davos speech, addressing its future and the threats facing it. "Right now, all eyes are on Washington. But who’s actually watching Europe at the moment?" Here are some highlights from his speech 🧵 — Christopher Miller (@christopherjm.bsky.social) January 21, 2025 at 8:34 AM
Zelensky: "Most of the world’s now thinking – so, what’s gonna happen to their relationship with America? What will happen to alliances? To support? To trade? How does President Trump plan to end wars? But no one is asking these kinds of questions about Europe. And we need to be honest about that." Zelensky: "Europe can’t afford to be second or third in line for its allies. If that happens, the world will start moving forward without Europe, and that’s a world that won’t be comfortable or beneficial for Europeans." Zelensky: "Europe needs to compete for the top spot in priorities, alliances, and technological development. We’re at yet another turning point, which some see as a problem for Europe, but others call a chance. Europe must establish itself as a strong global player. As an indispensable player." Zelensky: "Russia is turning into a version of North Korea – a country where human life means nothing, but they have nuclear weapons and a burning desire to make their neighbors’ lives miserable." Zelensky: "Even though Russia’s overall economic potential is way smaller than Europe’s, it produces several times more ammo and military equipment than all of Europe combined. That’s exactly the path of wars Moscow chooses to take."
x Zelensky speaks at the World Economic Forum in Davos "TikTok algorithms are stronger than some governments in Europe. The fate of smaller countries depends more on the owners of technology companies than on their laws"

x 🇪🇺🇺🇦🛡️ "To guarantee security after the war, Ukraine will need at least 200,000 Western peacekeepers, less is not going to work," — Zelensky said at the Davos forum. ❓In your opinion, will there be a peace agreement in 2025? Who can send their peacekeepers to Ukraine?

Zelenskyy and other Ukrainians insist -- at least publicly — that they have a good relationship with Trump and some in his administration.
x 🇺🇸🤔 Zelensky: "Sometimes there are extra voices around Trump that convey disinformation or a pro-Russian position to him. It is important for us that Europe be loud, that it be heard, that there are more of the necessary voices around Trump, so that he clearly understands the details and risks."

Sounds like a great idea to me.
I suppose if the Gulf of Mexico can become the Gulf of America, then the Black Sea can be the Russian Sea. Or maybe just the Sea of Putin.
x In the Saratov parliament, a proposal to rename the Black Sea to "Russian Sea" has been put forward by Deputy Denis Bulanov. He references the historical use of "Russian Sea" in the 14th–16th centuries. A document on the proposal has been sent to the Federal Registration and Cartography Service.

Oh sure, Russia can run up big deficits, but it can’t compete with us. U.S.A! U.S.A!
x 📉 Russia ended 2024 with a record budget deficit, Finance Ministry reported. ❗️The deficit was 3.5 instead of 3.3 trillion rubles, in 2022 and 2023, the hole in the budget was 3.3 and 3.2 trillion. Over three years of war, the hole has already amounted to 10 trillion rubles.
