DAY ONE: The First Direct Challenge to the Constitution [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

This is not an outrage of the day post. There will be no hyperbole, handwringing, or pictures of the felon. There will be just the facts.

Today Felonious suspended foreign aid for a 90 day review. Unlike the suspension of deportations pending review under the previous Administration, this suspension violates explicit statutory prohibitions regarding Executive embargos of appropriations. Lest we forget, the embargo of funds for Ukraine during Felonious' first tenure was an aspect of one of the grounds for his first Impeachment.

President Trump Suspends U.S. Foreign Aid Programs for 90-Day Review

President Donald Trump has signed an order suspending all U.S. foreign aid programs for 90 days to assess their alignment with the administration’s policy goals, Associated Press reports.

The order stipulates that "the foreign aid industry is not in the best interests of the United States and, in many cases, is contrary to American values." It also asserts that future aid must align fully with the President’s foreign policy objectives. However, many of the current aid programs were approved by Congress, with funding already allocated or mandated by law. This raises questions about the potential scope and impact of the suspension. Aid to major recipients such as Israel ($3.3 billion annually), Egypt ($1.5 billion), and Jordan ($1.7 billion) is unlikely to be significantly reduced due to long-term agreements and contractual obligations. Conversely, funding for United Nations agencies, including peacekeeping and human rights programs, may be targeted, as Republican administrations have historically sought to cut such contributions. The U.S. has already withdrawn from the UN Human Rights Council, and legislation prohibits funding the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) starting in March 2024, according to the report. It remains unclear how many programs will be affected or if the reviews will lead to significant policy changes.

The Courts struck the deportation suspension on rather specious grounds given prosecutorial discretion is part and parcel of Executive authority. Let's see what happens here.
