When a bad President takes office, people say something like: “It’s going to be a rough four years.” Four years? Really??? More people need to understand that Presidents do things that far outlast their limited time in office.
In the 1980’s, Ronald Reagan eliminated the Fairness Doctrine. He left office in 1988; and the Fairness Doctrine is still gone.
There are far fewer workers in labor unions than there were pre-Reagan. When Reagan left office, the labor unions did not suddenly re-appear.
Bill Clinton’s administration implemented a national ban on assault weapons. The ban was still in place until 2004, four years after Clinton left office. Clinton’s successor, George W. Bush, chose not to renew the assault weapon ban when it expired. 20 years (and numerous mass shootings) later, Clinton’s assault weapons ban seems unlikely to be brought back in the near future.
Everyone should remember that Presidents can put judges on the Supreme Court; and that those judges usually remain in power for decades after the Presidents who selected them are out of office. A Supreme Court with a right-leaning majority has, on several occasions, taken a wrecking ball to hard-fought progress. They’ve been able to do so during both Democratic and Republican administrations.
When a bad President wreaks havoc on our country and the people, things do not instantly go back to normal the day after an election. The destruction continues long afterwards. So for God’s sake, be careful who you elect!
