NO!!!! Not today’s performers!!!! What the heck do you think of me???!!!!!
I’ll be honest… I had NO idea what to write about tonight. I’ve tried to stay away from most of the news, although what I’ve seen since noon today has been horrible and promises only to get worse.
I did make a point of mindfully noticing GOOD moments in my day, and before I get to the music mentioned in the title, I want to share a few of those things because when I look back at this diary, I want to remember the joyful bits:
The snowfall last night was less than expected, maybe 4-5 inches of relatively light fluffy snow. So I bundled up and shoveled it away under a bright blue sky. It was beautiful and invigorating. I made hotel reservations for Netroots Nation, happening this August in New Orleans. More than ever, I’m going to want to spend a few days with some of my favorite humans working to make a better place for us all. I helped get my son ready to head back to college tomorrow, after a five week winter break. He had an exceptionally good first semester, and I’m really proud of him. We’re ordering from his favorite local restaurant for dinner tonight before he returns to dorm food. I spent a few minutes thinking how lucky I am that my immediate family isn’t dealing with division. Yes, we have family on both sides apparently OK with bringing a dude who literally makes Nazi salutes in public, but our little fivesome knows that’s all kinds of wrong. We also all know what the body of water to our south is called.
I spent time today removing all musical artists who played at either of Trump’s Inaugurations from my Spotify — you can select “Never Play This Artist” and I did. But then I went looking for who’s played at Democratic Inaugurations and here’s a selection of artists who deserve more airtime!! This isn’t an exhaustive list, so please add your own favorites in the comments!!
#39 Jimmy Carter
I know others performed, but here are two...
Linda Ronstadt performed Willie Nelson’s (made famous by Patsy Cline) Crazy:
Aretha Franklin sang Irving Berlin’s God Bless America:
#42 Bill Clinton
Two Inaugurals, many huge events, and SO many musicians. Here’s but a small taste from the many that performed:
Bob Dylan sang Chimes of Freedom:
LL Cool J used the beat from Diggy Down with an original set of lyrics just for that day:
I was today years old when I learned Dave Matthews Band performed Too Much at one of the 1997 Inaugural Balls:
#44 Barack Obama
Beyoncé sang Etta James’ At Last for Barack & Michelle Obama in 2009 during their first dance in office (cue all the feels!!!):
James Taylor sang America the Beautiful at Obama’s second Inauguration:
#46 Joe Biden
Uniquely staged due to the global pandemic, but we still had music!
Lady Gaga sang the National Anthem:
John Legend sang Anthony Newley & Leslie Bricusse’s Feeling Good:
I’m sure I left YOUR favorite performance out, so please share it for us, so we can be uplifted by all these artists! After tonight’s Tops, of course!!
