Poem for MLK, Jr. on his Birthday [1]

MLK, Jr.

In a dream, the man walks

between two lines

seemingly parallel,

though in the distant view

of time,

the two lines become one

indistinguishable

from each other.

When the man wakes,

he struggles with

the daily needs and tasks

like every other person

who comes to adulthood,

food, shelter, survival,

but there is a certain joy

that burns within him

lighting his way,

moving his feet,

a purpose,

a certainty...

which he speaks about,

marches about,

and prays about when

lonely nights

and dark days

try to stop him.

He has a vision:

that one day

all men and all women

will be treated equally

based on character and ability

and not on the color

of their skin

or the caste

of their birth –

that all life has its place

and is of equal value

on this earth.

So he breathed and acted

and challenged us –

which is how dreams

become real

one life

at a time.
