Nutshell recap of a low-energy inauguration speech. With brief commentary and some advice. [1]

The inaugural address was...mellow, shall we say? At least it was coherent enough to allow for a laundry list of the executive orders he plans to sign later today:

He lied that tariffs are a tax on foreign nations. They aren’t. That’s why they are called “tariffs”. You know what are? Nothing. Nations can’t tax other nations ‘cause of this thing called national sovereignty. I know, I know. That second one is a long word, but it means “no taxy without governmenty”.

He will declare an emergency at the southern border. There's no emergency at the southern border. There is one about 150 miles north of the border. (Remember all those terrible California Democrats who can’t fire manage their way out of a burning paper bag?) That’s much less a distance off than Sharpie Gate, which was 200-300 miles off. So, good news. Some of his lies are getting less inaccurate.

He will reinstate “ Remain in Mexico ." But he can ’t do that without Mexico's cooperation. I’m guessing Scheinbaum will tell him to take a hike. In the US. Y’know, so he remains in America.

We're going to take the Panama canal back. Because no fair. This came just minutes after saying his deepest wish is to be a unifier and a peacemaker. Yes, yes. “The conqueror is a great fan of peace. He prefers to move into your cities unopposed.” But, in truth, he is no conqueror. Grifter? Check. Rapist? Yes. Criminal? You betcha! Conqueror? To his credit, nah.

No more pronoun nonsense for the federal government. There are men, and there are women. Glad he cleared that up. /s

He's gonna change the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America." Also, Denali will be changed back to Mt. McKinley. That’ll show ‘em! But, he forgot about changing the Gulf of California to the Sea of Trump. And, come to think of it, I still can’t order my freedom fries from my local diner. Hm.

Law and order! He did manage here to gather up some enthusiasm in an otherwise...dispassionate address. Only thing is, crime is at a historic low already. So, there’s that.

No more government censorship. OK. Government doesn’t censor people much these days. Except of course books in places like Florida. Facebook does. Or doesn’t. And it’s not “censorship”, because none of us have any right to have a Facebook account.

From this day forward America will be a free and sovereign nation. From this speech, I think he means the government can tax other countries, doesn’t censor people, we can rename things the way we want, except not our personal pronouns. Ok.

He's going to make in his administration bring down prices. Good to know he has an idea of a plan.

The Green New Deal is dead. No snark on this one. This is very real and very bad,

In very brief, a low-energy speech providing medium rare hamburger for his base with — surprise — no plan what his administration tries to accomplish over the next four years. And no mention of pardons for the Jan6ers. Hm. So, the same ol’ over-promise/under-deliver performative politics to keep the base happy and the media media-ing while he runs his cons and turns over more of the bounty of this continent to the oligarchs and plutocrats. Seems pretty clear that he hasn’t changed one bit: he doesn’t really care about governing; he cares about the grift. Winning re-election was all about staying in the spotlight, staying out of jail, and bilking as much $$ as he can.

In this way, he certainly won last November.

The strange thing is, he doesn’t seem to really care that much.

**** ***** ****

On a final note: When I write winning reelection was all about staying in the spotlight, I mean it. Don’t give him that. Don’t let him into your head. To the best of your ability, stay informed about what he does , and not what outrageous or threatening things he says. That’s his game, and it works for him. Trump is bar none the greatest flimflam man in US history, and his a government by Three Ring Circus: he is the Ringmaster that barks in spotlight, while the real rich and the real money power, which he is not and not part of, take more of this country and the planet from the rest of us.

Is my watching his speech and writing about it part of this Circus? To the extent that all inaugural addresses are political theater, yes. I think major events like an inauguration merit coverage. But I will not pay much attention to what he gibbers and prattles week-to-week, let alone day-to-day. He blabs a lot about a lot of things. It is impossible to keep up with his firehose of lies, exhausting to try, and the end, again, that is his game. What he does , and not says, is what matters.

Unless, of course, if what matters to you is getting easy clicks.
