What I’ll be doing on January 20, 2025 [1]

Monday, January 20, 2025, will be a holiday. Many think the holiday is inauguration day, an event that comes every four years, and usually it is. But this January 20, is also the day honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and thankfully for me, it means that it’s still a day to celebrate.
While I accept the results of the November election as reflected of the will of the majority of Americans who bothered to vote, or who weren’t discouraged from voting by voter suppression efforts in certain states, I cannot in good conscience celebrater or welcome the inauguration of a convicted (and sentenced) felon, an avowed racist, a serial liar, and a rabid sexist to the most important job in the country.
Instead, tomorrow, I will honor a man who, though not perfect, dedicated his life to inspiring us to be better not worse, who worked to bring people together rather than drive them apart, and who treated everyone regardless of race, gender, or other condition, with respect. A man who was honest and who had integrity, and who put others before self.
King was a man who was capable of forgiving those who slandered him, rather than holding petty grudges like a whining eight-year-old. He treated everyone with respect, instead of making fun of those with handicaps. He preached against violence instead of inciting it. And, most importantly of all, he envisioned an America where people would be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. King would never have displayed such blatant disrespect for another fellow human as to object to the flags being flown at half-staff to mourn their passing just because it hurt his fragile ego to have such a thing happen on a day that he feels should be all about him.
I invite everyone, regardless of your politics to make a statement that this January 20, the most important observance is that which honors a man who stood for what is best about this country, not a man who typifies its worst.
