New Day Cafe: Coffee Mugs [1]

Good morning, Newdists! When I was first asked to write for New Day Cafe again, I was specifically asked to post about coffee mugs (but then I chose my own adventure). So that’s the topic this morning. What vessel do you use to drink coffee (or tea, or your favorite hot beverage)? Does it matter to you?
As for me, I have a weakness for coffee mugs. As in, I can’t stop myself from buying them. When we moved into our current house, the BF made me trim down my coffee mug collection, but I’ve slowly been adding more. I just can’t help myself. Here are some of the mugs in my current collection, starting with my political mugs (my favorite coffee mug genre):
Oof. I used to drink out of this one a couple of times a week, but don’t ask me how long it’s been.
My first Biden mug
This one turns into “Dark Brandon” with red eyes when you pour in hot liquid. No, I’m not going to demonstrate. Maybe I’ll feel up to it sometime in the 2030s, so ask me then.
This is from the 2020 Warren campaign (my primary vote, cast just before COVID changed the world!), but it’s an evergreen mug
I mean, yes
BIG OOF, I forgot I even had this one until I dug it out of the cupboard this morning. This one is painful!
Is this a political mug? I guess, LOL
Love this Ann Richards mug, and I have a matching coaster! I got this at some shop on South Congress Ave in Austin.
Need I say more?

Now, some of my non-political coffee mugs:
The BF got this for me for Mother’s Day, LOL (our lore is that Zoe got it for me)
IYKYN
This is a stupid mug I got from a Goodwill years ago that survived my last coffee mug purge
The other side of the above mug
I hardly ever use this because it’s so huge, but I like it!
lol
My students one semester got this for me. It has a little cat stirring spoon attached to it. I don’t use it very often but I keep it front-and-center in the cupboard and it makes me smile when I see it.
I’ll end with the most recent addition to my coffee mug collection. The BF and I went on a double-date to Meow Wolf on Friday, and I couldn’t leave without getting this mug. Check the link for more about it, because I don’t really know how to explain it. It’s an interactive art exhibit in multiple cities, and each location has a different theme. The Houston location is set up like a radio station, and you walk through multiple rooms trying to figure out what happened. Basically, the lore is that the radio station opened up a portal or something to another dimension, and that dimension swallowed up the station. So, for example, we went to the radio station break room and opened the fridge, which turned out to be a doorway leading to other trippy rooms. The level of detail is impressive—we spent a few hours there and probably missed a bunch of stuff. It’s crazy, and I wish we’d had edibles before we did it. But we got the season pass to go back, so there’s always next time!
Anyway, here’s the mug, which is almost certain to become one of my favorites:

Nom of the Week
This is going to be a weekly segment in which I share a pic of my favorite meal or food item I had in the previous week. Many weeks, the pic will be attractive (“food porn,” if you will). This isn’t really one of those weeks. But the below meal isn’t just my favorite this past week, it’s my favorite (so far) this year.
After Meow Wolf, we took our double-date out to dinner, and the vote was for something in the Mexican / Tex-Mex genre. We were about to go to our usual Tex-Mex spot, but our friend recommended this hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant near the center of Houston. It was in an old house, and when we walked in (to awkward stares from the employees and a dead-quiet restaurant), I was a little worried. But holy shit, when I tell you this is the best plate of mole enchiladas I’ve EVER had, that’s an understatement—it’s probably the best plate of enchiladas I’ve ever had PERIOD, and I’ve had a lot of enchiladas (it’s kind of my thing). We were even raving about the refried beans! Everything was so good, and we will be going back.
Cab View of the Week
When I accepted the Sunday diarist slot, I warned Marti that I might end up tormenting y’all with truck simulator shit. If you aren’t aware, I recently got into truck simulator PC games (American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2). I’m always taking screenshots in-game because they’re both just so beautiful and lifelike! This is how I’m going to get through the upcoming Trump years. The world may be falling apart, but when I’m hauling a virtual load, I can forget about it for a while and just be immersed in a gorgeous American or European landscape. You can see plenty more screenshots on my Bluesky, but in this space, I’ll share my favorite view from my virtual truck cab in the past week.
This week is a tie! First up is this lovely view of Washington from the cab of my 1985 Kenworth K100 cabover:
And then this beautiful sunset from the cab of my Kenworth W990. Taken somewhere in Kansas, I think.
