Carrying the flame since 1776, this brass chamber stick may really have been in the family since two Revolutionary War soldiers, Daniel Heady of Litchfield, Mass and his father, Peter owned it. I light this candle for January 20 as a reminder that carrying the light of American Freedom and Constitutional government is a legacy that future generations will strive to define just as the past 9 or 10 generations have. This is not about one election or one President, but how we labor to keep faith, through the years and through history, with the idea of America, where We The People, an enlightened public, rule democratically without king or autocrat. What the Founding generation went through, especially those who took up their long rifles and spent years struggling through mud and snow and ice, risking everything, we can only be in awe of. We might consider what we may have to be capable of - what courage, what determination - should Fate test us. We can not be so weak and dependent on comfort that we allow ourselves to be seduced into any sort of bondage. We are Americans. This light, we all carry in our hearts.
