“Mirrors for princes” is a genre of book that’s been written since antiquity to advise rulers (usually monarchs, with exceptions) how to rule justly and prevent failure.
“Thieves Of State”: Why Corruption Threatens Global Security by Sarah Chayes is an examination of how various administrations fall due to corruption and cutting themselves off from their populace.
This has been replicated over, and over thru history and it has been shown to set off religious extremism. Think Martin Luther was staging a religious war with his 95 theses? Nope, Chayes makes a strong case for viewing it as a revolution against kleptocratic practices of the church in Rome.
She also lays out why 9/11 happened: It wasn’t just about the west’s pluralistic culture and its transporting it to Muslim countries. It was about the U.S government’s backing of corrupt regimes in the Middle East.
Muslim Imams are using western culture as a distraction to entice their followers to engage in war against corrupt rulers in their own countries. Just as Republican politicians are using culture wars to distract their voters from the rise of corruption in their party and the incoming administration.
I cannot recommend this book more, it’s not very long, only 218 pages with an appendix of very interesting power point presentations of various regimes, including the Catholic Church circa 1500.
Republicans are playing with fire and as usual, innocent people are going to get burned because of it. Buckle up, it’s gonna be a long 4 years.
