Vote for the one that will steal best
I grew up watching New Orleans LA YV stations because they were the strongest signals we receive on our TV antenna. Louisiana Politics were both entertainment and a mystery. Why did they persist in electing people who would break one or more laws and end up in jail after one or two terms? Among the notable politicians was Jimmy Davis, best known for his country music rendition of “You Are My Sunshine”, which also became his campaign song. In his second term the “only bridge across the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge … opened for traffic in 1964, its south end then emptied into a swamp, and for years it awaited funding to connect it to LA 70 and other roads.” (Wikipedia). In fact when flying into the New Orleans airport, Moisant Field (named after aviator John Moisant, who died in 1910 in an airplane crash on agricultural land where the airport is now located) in the late 1970s, you could look down on the bridge to nowhere because on end had no connecting road.
Then there was Edwin Edwards. He served four terms as Governor: 1972–1980, 1984–1988, and 1992–1996. :When questioned about receiving illegal campaign contributions, he replied that "It was illegal for them to give, but not for me to receive."” (Wikipedia) In celebration of his election to the governorship for the third time, he rented a 747 and flew his supports of Montecarlo to gamble.
In 1999 Edwards was found guilty on seventeen of twenty-six counts, including racketeering, extortion, money laundering, mail fraud, and wire fraud; his son Stephen was convicted on 18 counts.
In the summer of 1968, I attended Tulane University in New Orleans. I asked a fellow student who was from Lafayette Louisiana, how the people of Louisiana determined who to vote for given the history of law-breakers elected to office. His response was that “We know they is all crooks, so we elect the one who will steal best!”
Given the characteristics of the people selected by the Trump team to run the U.S. government, it appears that the Louisiana attitude has gone national.
