Gooshing Bugs and Oligarchs at Bluesky [1]

Now that we can embed Bluesky posts here on DK WITH IMAGES IN, the next two tasks that will help us are fixing bugs in the Bluesky feed mechanism, and getting a way to repost DK stories directly to Bluesky (and preferably removing the menu options for X and Facebook). The DK elves are delighted to be working on further support for Bluesky, they tell me.
I am particularly happy with embedding Bluesky posts in DK posts, from feeds about combating Global Warming, thus:
x Agrivoltaics allow for dual land use by generating renewable energy while providing space for agricultural activities beneath. Shade from solar panels reduces soil temp, helping to retain moisture &support microbial life essential for carbon storage & productivity. www.linkedin.com/posts/stephe...

There are also feeds for cats, dogs, birds, science, and I don’t know what all. (You can search the collection of feeds for whatever interests you, and you can contribute to a lot of them.)
All kinds of cats, actually, not just woozles as in Sekrit Army posts.
x The recent release of 4 lynx in the Cairngorm mountains highlights the nuances of managing the needs of stakeholders, including the big cats. Darragh Hare, @georgeholmes.bsky.social & @hannalp.bsky.social explore the challenges surrounding illegal wildlife releases. 👉 bit.ly/4hmzSKV

Jonathan @renewableenergy.bsky.social has been tackling a variety of problems over there. Some are trivial, like misspelling agrivoltaics as agrivoltiacs (fixed).
x Done. What a terrible gaffe. 🤦♂️ It’s ’magically’ working now having fixed that in the feed design as well. Note to self: building feeds between midnight and 3am is not advised. — Jonathan (@renewableenergy.bsky.social) January 14, 2025 at 3:13 PM
Been there, done that, yes. No t-shirt.
Some are systemic, most notably the nearly total failure of the Bluesky feature for adding posts with designated tags to the relevant feeds, and lots of totally irrelevant posts getting into the feeds. I have been writing about Jonathan’s feeds and the tags he tried to set up in my Renewable Tuesday and Renewable Friday posts. There have been fewer irrelevant posts included recently, but we have no progress to report on proper tag support.
I have started filing bugs on Bluesky’s Github instance, but I don’t know enough to file some of them, and it seems that Jonathan doesn’t either. He understands the code for his own feeds, but not the Bluesky Open Source codebase.
Hashtags do not work for adding posts to feeds #7315
Welcome friends! This is the codebase for the Bluesky Social app. This is a React Native application, written in the TypeScript programming language. It builds on the atproto TypeScript packages (like @atproto/api), code for which is also open source, but in a different git repository. There is a small amount of Go language source code (in ./bskyweb/), for a web service that returns the React Native Web application. The Build Instructions are a good place to get started with the app itself. The Authenticated Transfer Protocol ("AT Protocol" or "atproto") is a decentralized social media protocol. You don't need to understand AT Protocol to work with this application, but it can help. Learn more at: Overview and Guides

Protocol Specifications
Blogpost on self-authenticating data structures The Bluesky Social application encompasses a set of schemas and APIs built in the overall AT Protocol framework. The namespace for these "Lexicons" is app.bsky.*.
Here is a good starting point for understanding how feeds are supposed to work. I will dive in here in future Tuxville posts.
Custom Feeds
Custom feeds, or feed generators, are services that provide custom algorithms to users through the AT Protocol. This allows users to choose their own timelines, whether it's an algorithmic For You page or a feed of entirely cat photos.
I recommend that our Open Source mavens join Bluesky, and follow all of the Free Software/Open Source supporters over there. This is a huge hairy big deal, assisting in the corporate suicides of X, Facebook/Meta, WaPo, and others, whose owners are vying to be our oligarchic corporate overlords in the new administration.
x Free Our Feeds, which includes support from the Mozilla Foundation, is working with Bluesky to make sure the open source social media landscape is robust — even if it means more competition for Bluesky itself. trib.al/bQEJTzE

x "The group, whose supporters include Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Mozilla Foundation president Mark Surman, aims to raise US$30 million over three years to back Bluesky’s open-source mission, even in the event Bluesky doesn’t." #FreeOurFeeds thelogic.co/news/quebec-...

I intend to revive this presently inactive group, and to write about these issues weekly. I have slots open on Mondays and Saturdays. Let me know when you would prefer to read about all of this.
