Street Prophets Friday: Dunmore Head (photo diary/open thread) [1]

Well, here I am again, still fuzzy, still posting diaries of my photos from last summer. Yes, I'm taking us back to the Emerald Isle yet again. This installment has a hike out to Dunmore Head.

Sunrise in Cloghane

Our bus driver dumped our tour group off next to a path down to a historic site. The man in the ticket booth blocking the path must have thought he'd won the lottery, but we skipped this rather disappointing pile of rocks in favor of a walk through the pastures looking out over Blasket Sound.

You can decide for yourself if we missed out on an amazing experience at the fort's website.

Our group on the march

Green grass, low stone walls and tufts of heather

On the hike out to Dunmore Head we started seeing little rings of stone in the pastures.

Rings of stone that may have been structures like the ones built by the monks who secluded themselves out on the islands. The monk's enclave and Dunmore Head itself were used as filming locations for the last trilogy of Star Wars movies.

It looked like somebody built up one of these structures into a finished "beehive" shape.

The stone "beehives"featured prominently in several scenes such as this one:

From the next pasture it seemed that all the sheep of Ireland had a patch of colorful spray paint on them. These were sporting a swath of sky blue on their sides.

Dunmore Head and Blasket Sound

Goat tethered to a spectacular view of the waves

There's the goat again in the middle foreground— maybe indicating just how far away those waves really were.

For the locals, that the area was featured in a Star Wars film, has already lost their interest. It does still draw tourists though.

Little concrete shelter on Dunmore Head

The Coumeenoole Ogham Stone. And no, the writing on this weathered rock is not very visible, but it is there. More about Ogham writing is over on Wikipedia.

Heading back and looking to the left.

Looking to the right— with the pastures we hiked across in the background.

Below the cliffs, a sandy beach

Bladderwrack and barnacles on the rocks

Keep safe out there!

Thanks for stopping by.

This is an open thread.
