Never Give Up - Never Surrender [1]

Why Do We Quit?

Okay, I’ll admit it—I borrowed that line from a really cool movie from the 90s. I think it was called ‘Galaxy Trek’, featuring Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor and Severus Snape. Throughout the movie, the Tool Man repeatedly declares, “Never give up, never surrender!” It’s a sentiment I completely agree with.

Yet, time and again, I see people abandon their goals just as they’re on the brink of success. Someone might decide to improve their life—whether by changing careers, learning a new language, or picking up a musical instrument. They start strong, investing hours in learning, practicing, and applying their new skills.

But then, just before they cross the finish line, they stop. They give up. And it’s heartbreaking. But why?

I want it all, and I want it NOW!

The Culture of Instant Gratification

A large part of the problem is the fast-paced, cyberized culture we live in today. We’re surrounded by things that promise results in no time: Quick-check, Quick-marts, Instagram, Instacart—even Instant Oatmeal! It’s no wonder people grow frustrated when success doesn’t come instantly.

Unrealistic promises don’t help, either. Ads with claims like, “Earn a six-figure income in six days!” or “Go from zero to hero overnight!” Look closely, though, and you’ll see the fine print: “results may vary.” Translation? Success like that is possible, but not for you.

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games.”

The Reality of Success: It’s a Process

Here’s the truth: nothing worthwhile comes without effort, patience, and persistence. Failure isn’t the end; it’s a stepping stone. In fact, the most successful people are often the ones who’ve failed the most.

Consider Michael Jordan, who once said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Stories like this remind us that success is a journey, not an overnight destination.

Practical Tips to Keep Going When It Gets Tough

If you’re feeling discouraged, here are some strategies to keep you moving forward:

Break Your Goals into Smaller Steps: Big goals can feel overwhelming. Divide them into smaller, more manageable tasks, and celebrate each milestone you achieve. Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity: Instead of fearing failure, view it as a chance to learn. Ask yourself, “What can I learn from this experience?” Surround Yourself with Positivity: Seek out people who support and inspire you. A strong support system can make all the difference. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Progress—no matter how small—is still progress. Don’t let the pursuit of perfection hold you back. Revisit Your “Why”: Remind yourself why you started in the first place. Keeping your purpose in mind can reignite your motivation.

Conclusion

Nothing worthwhile comes quick and easy. Setbacks will happen. You’ll fail, and probably more than once.

Take the story of N.J. Edison, the inventor of the lightbulb. He failed over a thousand times before finally perfecting his invention. Imagine if he’d given up halfway through—you might be reading this article in the dark!

Remember, patience and persistence are the keys to achieving your dreams. So whenever you feel like quitting, heed the Tool Man’s advice: Never give up. Never surrender!
