Biden Admits He Failed at Messaging [1]

Many here have bemoaned the downright awful failure of Dem’s messaging, marketing and selling. On the other hand, many here have argued that messaging isn’t the problem. But finally, President Biden, in an interview with Lawrence O’Donnell (see this HuffPost article), has finally confirmed his failure in messaging, marketing and selling his accomplishments:
“The mistake we made was, I think I made, was not getting our allies to acknowledge that ‘the Democrats did this,‘” Biden said. “So, for example, build a new billion-dollar bridge over a river. Well, call it the ‘Democratic bridge,’ figuratively speaking. Talk about who put it together. Let people know that this is something the Democrats did. That it was done by the party.”
More importantly, he took the blame:
“I’m not a very good huckster,” Biden acknowledged.
And some here also have said the Dems emphasize policy too much in favor of communicating, which is essential to successful politics.
Biden suggested he’d spent “too much time on the policy and not enough time on the politics.”
Perhaps most depressing is that he acknowledges a major reason for his and the Dems’ failure to communicate, namely, considering selling as beneath them, something I’ve argued validates the (unfounded) criticism that Dems are elitist:
And of forcefully promoting the party’s achievements, Biden said: “It just seems, I know it sounds so stupid to say it, almost bad taste.”
I take no comfort from this and only hope the Dems are listening to him and act accordingly or we will be wandering the political wilderness for years to come. It’s not a matter of waiting for the next Congressional elections. It’s a generational perspective. You know, something like the Republicans have adopted since Reagan.
