IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
This group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

Last week I called about getting Buddy fixed before we have more puppies. He’s getting done on the 20th. Apparently because they weren’t fixed yet, technically the puppies ‘belonged’ to the shelter. We ended up paying for Rhenn and Fenna, because they weren’t taking my puppies. Stewie we are officially fostering for them, because they are overcrowded anyway. But for a few hours there Bit and I were both really anxious because we didn’t know how it would go. Luckily Bit had gotten a back payment from the government for a stimulus check she never received, so when they tried to say we couldn’t keep them, she started laying out 100’s. $400 later they were ours. They became a lot more polite and giving once they saw the money. And they agreed to let us foster Stewie, since they didn’t have room, it’s been in the 20’s and 30’s at night, and they would have had to put him in an outside kennel he would have to share with a strange dog. He was better off coming back home with us. He’s on their website and has had a couple of people ask after him.
On the bright side, that included them getting fixed, their puppy shots and a microchip. But they wouldn’t officially be ‘ours’ until after they were fixed. I figured we were at least even, given that we were going to take them there for shots and to be fixed anyway. The only bad part is, we get less say in who takes Stewie.
Monday we took them to be fixed. Fenna and Stewie came home Monday evening when Bit got off. Rhenn had to stay another night because he had retained testicles, aka cryptorchidism.
This surgery usually costs from $400-$1000. So now I feel even less bad about having to pay $400 for my own puppies. Rhenn came home Tuesday after Bit got off work, she and I walked up there and he rode home in my lap. He has a lot of stitches on his abdomen, which is why we had to put the t-shirt on him. I have surgery PJs ordered, they’ll be here sometime today. In the mean time, a t-shirt, a hair tie to fasten it to his collar, and a pair of his mom’s dog pants to keep him from stepping out of the sleeves seems to be working pretty well.
The hard part is keeping them relatively calm. They are getting antsy at staying in the crate a lot more, but it’s keeping them from jumping around and playing rough, especially with Sunny. She’s been sleeping on the green blanket next to the crate, especially at night. I was skeptical that this youtube video would help, but it really does seem to keep them calm and help them sleep more:
Their breed is, of course working against them. Heelers are active dogs. I asked for tips in the Heeler groups and got mostly “good luck” or “medicate them”. Their BarkBox came on Wednesday, and having a few new toys helped as well. So far I’ve avoided medicating them, other than what the humane society sent, which is a non-narcotic anti-inflammatory and amoxicillin. Pill pockets are working REALLY well for them. They don’t care about the pills at all so long as they get those treats of peanut buttery goodness. I had gotten a small bag in case they didn’t work, so I’ll have to order more next week, especially since Buddy is going to be needing them as well. They’ve even watched me put the pills in, they don’t care, they just want those treats!
I’m thinking of getting them a pupsicle, preferably two, but I may not be able to do that until next month. I think it would be a good thing to keep them busy when they need to be calmer. Hopefully they will never have to have surgery again, but there are other times when they need to stay calm that it would be helpful with. And Sunny’s not getting fixed until March.
Anyway, that’s why I’ve been SUPER busy for the past week, and we’ve got another week to go until they get their stitches out, and Buddy goes on Monday to get done as well. At least he’s a little calmer than the puppies. And he’s used to being tethered for part of the day.
Wish us luck!
