The current fires in Los Angeles have been devastating to numerous people. One of these is Sharon Clark, the founder and president of the cat rescue The Cat Posse. At 3am Wednesday January 8th, Sharon and her sister had to evacuate her home in Altadena. They managed to safely take all of the rescue cats that were at her home. Sadly, her home and catio did not survive.

I first met Sharon Clark about 20 years ago when I was living in the foothills of Los Angeles. I had recently become catless when my 19 year old cat Fritz crossed the Rainbow bridge.

Fritz at 19

The local PetCo in La Canada had weekly pet adoptions. Sharon was the lead member of a pet rescue that brought adoptable cats and kittens to the Petco every weekend. I was still grieving losing Fritz, so I wasn't quite ready to adopt yet. I started going to the Petco every few weeks to look at the kitties. Sharon noticed that I was going there and she struck up a pleasant conversation with me. Every time that I went there, Sharon made a point to greet me and engage in a nice conversation. She always has a smile for anyone that was there.

After a few months, a grey kitten caught my eye. When I picked him up, he instantly put his little face to my mouth. I felt that he had given me a kiss and with that, he stole my heart. I immediately informed Sharon that I wanted him, but I had to find another kitten there to be his companion. I looked at the available kittens and spotted an adorable black one who was looking after some younger kittens. I named them Mishka and Roagie.

The pair became instantly bonded

A few years later, both of my parents passed away within an hour of each other. I now had to find a home for their beloved German Shepherd, Dena. I contacted Sharon. She instantly volunteered to help me. She listed Dena online through her charity and had people fill out applications. She prescreened all of the applications and only gave me the ones that she felt would be good pet parents. I took a few months, but I finally found a wonderful home for Dena. I could never have done it without Sharon’s help. For that, I am eternally grateful.

The Cat Posse is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit. Everyone involved in the charity is a volunteer. Every cent that the charity receives goes towards the cats. They do not have a set physical location. No one is paid a salary. Volunteers house and care for all of the cats. That is why the loss of the catio is so devastating. A number of the cats also lost their home.

Here is a video that was made for Race For The Shelters. It was a fundraiser in Pasadena.

Sharon has devoted her life to advocating and rescuing cats in need. Now she is the one in need. And the cats need a new catio. There is a GoFundMe to help her through this time.

If you would be interested in donating directly to the Cat Posse, they are a 501(c)3 non-profit. I believe that it is a worthy charity.
