Voter Mobilization vis-a-vis Constituent Service Request forms from Canvassing Voters door-to-door [1]

This is kinda, sorta a follow-up to yesterday’s diary, What Voters told us about Voting in 2024.
I spent two days participating in bipartisan, academic exercises discussing the results of the 2024 election. To be honest, it was pretty painful. And while i didn’t exactly withhold our data on the passing of Constituent Service Request forms (we hadn’t developed it at that point), i didn’t volunteer it either. Because the results of using CSRs in terms of voter mobilization surprised even me.
3,106 volunteers Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website] volunteers participated in our effort to understand why the voters we talked to last year chose to vote as promised. But there was quickly a bifurcation in that effort because 438 of those wanted to know if our use of the Constituent Service Request forms had any impact on voter decisions to vote last November. Another 84 volunteers jumped into that group (we had some vocal volunteers about using the CSRs).
Almost all of these volunteers had had personal experiences helping voters fill out Constituent Service Request forms. Some even thought that was all we should be doing. They didn’t see CSRs as auxiliary tasks. Having listened to volunteers rave about their experiences with voters in this regard, i could see why they enjoyed walking with them.
I didn’t personally engage in this exercise. I was more focused on the voters identified the post-Harris entrance. But these volunteers uncovered more useful information, afaict.
As you can see in the table to the right (or above), CSR-driven volunteers had success contacting voters who had filled out Constituent Service Request forms with us. Over the past 2 years, Hope Springs volunteers had helped 50,840 voters fill out CSRs at their doors in these 9 Swing States (Ohio was a “Swing State” in 2023 where we expended considerable energy to win that ballot initiative). We were able to contact 18,369 of these voters this Winter — which i think is a pretty good percentage of them. Using both our walking lists and the information we had collected from the voter, we tried to reach them through phone calls and email (to arrange a phone call). And most of us were surprised who many were willing to talk about this experience, even those who didn’t really get the satisfaction they sought by filling out a CSR.
But the overwhelming impression voters told us can be summed up in a nutshell: they were thrilled to be asked.
That was not really unexpected — i’ve been telling candidates for years to use this devise to connect with voters because of that reaction. But i also warned them that once they created this expectation, you have to be willing to continue it, and not just when you are running.
Hope Springs from Field PAC begins knocking on doors again on March 1st. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach.
Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support:
