The Oddities of Climate Change [1]

It snowed at the beginning of December, here in the Monongahela Valley.
My car’s windshield was covered with ice. I truly, madly, deeply hate scraping the ice off my windshield. Happily, I haven’t had to do it for a few years. Unhappily, I no longer had an ice scraper.
So, I scraped as much as I could with what I could, and headed for the local supermarket, which is only a few blocks away, certain they would have one.
Normally, as winter approaches, they have a display of ice scrapers, ice melter and snow shovels somewhere near the entrance.
They didn’t get them in. I suppose they didn’t think they’d need them. I had to buy a hard plastic spatula and make do with that. (I have since purchased an ice scraper at Aldi’s. The spatula will enjoy a spa day in the dishwasher, before being relegated to the kitchen.)
For the past two years, my snow shovel has lived in the basement. I’ve been able to deal with what snow we had with a heavy duty yard broom. The shovel is now by the kitchen door, where the neighbors can’t steal it, but I have it handy to dig myself out.
I’m going to have to go find some ice melter. Aldi’s doesn’t have any, but the local supermarket may have gotten some in by now. If worst comes to worst, I can go to WalMart. (I love WalMart almost as much as I love scraping ice off my windshield.)
We’re having honest to gosh winter, this year, in the Monongahela Valley. Skiers and snowboarders are heading for the slopes, eager to slide down some real live snow, that isn’t man made.
Interestingly, the men who once roamed the streets with shovels, offering to clear someone’s walk for a reasonable fee, aren’t here this year.
I’d like to find one. I’m not as young as I think I am, and I’d much rather have someone else deal with the snow.
None of my neighbors have cleared their walks. I think they expect the snow to melt.
According to the weather reports that’s not going to happen for a while.
Five years ago, at this time of year, I was out in my yard, in a light weight jacket, planting crocus bulbs that something dug up and ate.
In the waning days of 2024, I was thinking of getting some hyacinth bulbs and planting them, since I’d be able to get them cheap, and it was still warm enough to plant bulbs.
Now I’m hoping the bulbs I did plant will be okay, as the windchill dips below zero.
I’ve been through winters like this before. I’ve been through a lot of them. But it’s been a while, and real winter is taking some getting used to.
On the other hand, when spring comes, this year, I will really appreciate it.
