Marcy Wheeler Identifies the GOP Coffin Nails: Right-Wing DEI! Updated: Rubin chimes in! [1]

On her emptywheel blog this morning, Marcy came up with the perfect frame for not just opposing Pete Hegseth (whose DoD confirmation hearing just concluded), but all the other outrageously unqualified Cabinet appointees Trump is foisting on us: Trump’s choices to run the government with him are all supremely unqualified, such that it amounts to right wing DEI policy.

Here’s how Marcy puts it:

Republicans claim to oppose “DEI” because it lowers standards. At the same time, at a time when DOD increasingly has to rely on a second chance program that Hegseth endorsed to qualify (disproportionately male) candidates with physical, educational, or legal disqualifications, they’re rushing to install someone whose disqualifications may do real damage, even assuming America’s adversaries don’t find a way to use them to compromise the Defense Secretary. And now, having capitulated to Trump’s demand to install someone who is so obviously unqualified to lead DOD, it’ll make it easier for Republicans to confirm Tulsi Gabbard and RFK Jr. You’ve already put the good of the country behind loyalty to Trump. Trump and his allies bullied the Senate into backing a DEI Christian Nationalist, one who himself backs DEI for (ha!) fat men with criminal records.

This is polemic gold. I hope the Dems pick it up and run like the wind with it. If they don’t, that in itself is a very bad sign.

If we think of this as a combat analogy, it’s like your enemy has tossed a grenade into your fox-hole, but forgot to pull the pin on it. The Dems have a fully functional GOP-munition, who’s destructive potential against the makers of that political land mine is almost incalculable.

“The Trump Cabinet is a GOP DEI Shit Show!”

..or something like that. The Senate has yet to vote as a whole on Hegseth’s appointment, and there are still enough GOP votes in limbo, such that it’s not too late to employ this bit of enemy-provided ordinance “with extreme prejudice,” as the CIA parlance has it (but figuratively, of course).

Update, 10:30 am EST: Jen Rubin, on her new blog after leaving the Bezos-destroyed WaPo, takes up the meme and runs with it: substack.com/...
