An Epitaph for Democracy [1]

When I think about the upcoming change in administrations, I feel a deep chill, down to my very bones. It is not that cold in my nape of the forest, (an almost steamy 17 F here), nor is the weather particularly threatening, other than a potential byte of frost. The cause is obvious - Donald J. Trump.
The only things worse than he are his latest nominees, the motley collection of vagrants, liars, thieves, vagabonds, rapists, drunks, MAGA, and worse. Even with such words, it remains a rather kind and benign description of his future cabinet makers. Pity that they have no wood-working or other marketable skills and absolutely no sense of taste.
I was going to post a the latest list of his nominees, but it made me almost as nauseous as the idea of how craven and spineless the current crap of US Senators (R) have become. I do not know just what kind of blackmail Putin gave to Trump, but it seems as though every single member feels the potential wrath of MAGA, and far worse, the threats from Trump, should they ever think or act on their own.
Clearly, their fear is real and the cause seems obvious. Blackmail.
The senators’ behavior over the past two days reminds me of the Walt Disney portrayal of lemmings, a misrepresentation of an entire species so great that it became sad part of our culture. The R senators are going off the cliff, but only because their alternatives, in their minds, are even worse.
Even today, Bondi refuses to acknowledge who won the previous election. In a stunning change, Ernst now thinks a rapist is a fine choice to lead our entire military. I would bet a goodly and godly number of R senators would still support another rapist like Gaetz, had he not withdrawn his name.
Obviously our country is under attack from without, the biggest threats being the Chinese (both economically and militarily) and Russia (with Putin’s intel units creating lots of serious threats and problems). I strongly suspect Putin is the major, but not the only source for data being used to corrode our political system. But the attacks from within are even more corrosive and dangerous.
Both internal and external threats thrive today. Neither our cultural mindset, nor our current form of government are suited to deal with them. The domestic scourges of modern society are easily identified - Social Media and the Fox Network. Our constitution and its amendments were the work of genius 200+ years ago, they had a basic and mostly accurate understanding of humanity, given the severe limitations of those times. Despite those limitations, they took into account most of humanity’s needs, foibles, gifts, and defects. Their (our) constitution created some very fertile ground for humanity. It allowed for incredible growth in social, economic, military, scientific and artistic endeavors. But its authors and enactors of it had no clue what future technology could accomplish, both the good and bad. The good? Our growth and development. The bad? Misinformation, conspiracy theories, and mistrust of knowledge, experts and history. MAGA.Donald Trump. And more.
The poison currently being injected into our society’s bloodstream has caused us to stumble. That misstep was just one reason why we now face Trump Ver. 2.0. It will only get worse. Twitter has become a wasteland, instead of a useful, easy to use tool for millions. YouTube recently decided moderation was wrong. If Zuck were a car manufacturer, I suspect airbags, brakes, seatbelts, and working steering would just have to go because of their inconvenience.
MAGA are, collectively, inane, if not insane. They are incredibly easy to sway with lies and falsehoods, they are easily flattered by the likes of a future dictator like trump, and they are never, ever wrong. Misinformation, disinformation and conspiracy theories abound in their world. They are far preferred over real facts and knowledge. Experts are ignored, education is looked down upon, and truth becomes more elusive than Dark Matter. The problem is it spreads out. Social media, or rather its misuse, are to blame.
In a rational society, Zuck, Elon, and the Donald would not be heroes, but villains. Ours is no longer a rational society.
Depression is becoming widespread. It is a matter of time before the theme song to the movie MASH is the norm.
Given the complexities in running various parts of our government, take any of his choices for his cabinet, add a touch of MAGA madness, pour liquid benzene over cubes of dry ice, stir carefully, then pray for Zaphod to save us. No democrat seems to be in the mood to even try.
