The story itself is behind a paywall, but who didn't see this coming?

The Breakfast of Champions? Trump defense nominee ordered three gin and tonics for breakfast: witness. www.rawstory.com/…
The New Yorker's Jane Mayer reports that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team has waged "an intense, and in many ways unprecedented, behind-the-scenes campaign" to "intimidate and silence potential witnesses" who could deliver damaging testimony against Pete Hegseth, the man tapped by Trump to be his next secretary of defense. Among other things, Mayer reported that Trump's allies are trying to clamp down on stories about Hegseth's alleged alcohol abuse. ✂️ However, one source told Mayer that they witnessed Hegseth drinking excessively within the last two years, as the Trump DoD pick allegedly ordered three gin and tonics during a breakfast the two had at a bar back in 2023.
===
This is a long and good real time summary of Hegseth's confirmation hearing. Dems were on fire, Rethugs...circled the wagons.

x The Hegseth hearing is doing one thing incredibly well: it’s establishing that when his leadership at DoD fails, it’ll be clear that GOP Senators knew, excused it, and they own it. Serious concerns about experience & judgment are literally being laughed off. — Joyce White Vance (@joycewhitevance.bsky.social) January 14, 2025 at 9:37 AM

Hahahahahahahahaha!
x GOP members complaining about reduction of military standards while using a chart that misspells the word military!

There are, and will continue to be, multiple takes on Jack Smith's Report. Here's The Contrarian's view. Contrarian Take on Volume One of Jack Smith’s Report. contrarian.substack.com/…
The fact that we are already familiar with almost all of the facts in the first volume of Jack Smith's final report on January 6th and Donald Trump's attempted self-coup, makes them no less horrifying. The report lays out in surgical detail the five chapters of Donald Trump's effort to sabotage the 2020 election and perpetuate himself in power. That begins with his pressure campaign to get state officials to reverse the election results, moves through his fraudulent elector scheme, then covers squeezing both DOJ and then Mike Pence to do his bidding, before culminating with the violence of January 6. But because he has achieved through the ballot box what he failed to do through his 2020 post-election conduct, we now face the nightmare of a president who will have those same levers of power, and experience in how to use them. What’s more, this time he'll likely be surrounded by sycophants rather than of “grown-ups” in the room.

Liz Cheney weighs in.
Here's an easier to read version.
The Special Counsel’s 1/6 Report, made public last night, confirms the unavoidable facts of 1/6 yet again. DOJ’s exhaustive and independent investigation reached the same essential conclusions as the Select Committee. All this DOJ evidence must be preserved. But most important now, as the Senate considers confirming Trump’s Justice Department nominees: if those nominees cooperated with Trump’s deceit to overturn the 2020 election, they cannot now be entrusted with the responsibility to preserve the rule of law and protect our Republic. As our framers knew, our institutions only hold when those in office are not compromised by personal loyalty to a tyrant. So this question is now paramount for Republicans: Will you faithfully perform the duties the framers assigned to you and do what the Constitution requires? Or do you lack the courage?
I would add: Will you follow the oath you swore to uphold?

Another story that's behind a paywall. I cribbed this from The Maddow Blog. www.msnbc.com/...
Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke apparently isn’t done exploring political opportunities: The former congressman is reportedly interested in chairing the Texas Democratic Party. In recent years, O’Rourke has run unsuccessful gubernatorial, presidential and U.S. Senate campaigns.

Dog, the idiocracy circus is almost back in town. (Sorry, it's xit).
x The president-elect appears ignorant of the fact that there’s been an “external revenue service” since July 31, 1789. That’s when George Washington signed legislation creating the US Customs Service, the forerunner of what is now @CBP. pic.twitter.com/v0Vgr25PTw — Andrew Feinberg (@AndrewFeinberg) January 14, 2025

=== We're still tinkering with the Evening Shade for after the sh!tstorm hits next week, but it seems FIDJT could use an Evening Shade Theme Song. Here's a very strong contender. The video is cute, but the lyrics are brilliant, and so spot on! x x YouTube Video
