Mike Hynson has paddled to the other side. Known for being one half of the duo in Endless Summer, a surf flick from the Bruce Brown in the early ‘60’s. In the California surf community he was recognized as a legendary shaper. Being part of the “Red Fin Army” was aspiring for surfers at the time and Mike was the tip of the spear when it came to big wave board design.
A couple weeks ago Mavericks was huge, “Big Wednesday” huge 80-100ft, saw a guy with a Red Fin head out on a jet ski. Hynson’s designs are still front and center.
He’s been referred to as “California Cool”. Yes he was, when I was a young lad and went with my older surfing buddies to see Endless Summer, my path was chosen. I spent the next 25 years looking for the perfect wave, always searching.
Almost 70 now and surfing is now a luxury to me, I think I’ll paddle out on my longboard and remember all the times Mike influenced my life and my surfing. Blessings to a man who was definitely “California Cool”.
