Discussion
My father hated preachers with a passion. Once when he was a little kid the preacher told him and his brother if they could keep quiet for a long time a day, an hour. I think it was more than an hour but less than a day. The preacher would give them 50 cents. Back in the day when there used to be 50 cent pieces. Which was like $20 to my father, maybe $50. It was a BFD. So him and his brother did it and got their 50 cent pieces. But then were forced to give it up in the collection plate that Sunday.
So I was raised to always watch the money when churchy things were being discussed. Jampolsky pointed towards ACIM but that was it. He didn’t urge me to come to Tiberon where he had established his Center for Attitudinal Healing. I could have gone to many other groups I guess. They were all different Tarah Singh, Ken Wapnick and probably many more. We all liked to talk about it. I liked the small discussion groups the best with their nominal ‘love offering’ and I had quite a few cassette tapes mostly Marianne Williamson. I found Williamson’s lectures better than her books. I went to one in person lecture and one in person workshop of hers but I am not a Dead Head so I didn’t travel much.
Yes I was always concerned about the money. I used to dimly wonder about why Schucman and Thetford weren’t hassled more by Columbia University about their copy machine use, office supplies use. In fact they didn’t discuss ever having any thoughts as to turning in their time cards.
I found an interesting gossip about that. Lately there was a story about ACIM in Harper’s Magazine. The New Age Bible. By Sheila Heti. Heti broke it to me that there has always been talk of the CIA funding Thetford. I went into a tailspin digesting that. I guess it was just not talked about. But it certainly explain money. I will have to re-read her article.
The CIA was always looking for ways to control people, so religion has always been thought to be a great way to control people. Except that it never actually works. The funny thing about ACIM is that it is not a double edged sword. I can always listen to your religion when you explain it to me and always say yeah. It is exactly ACIM.
Well except for food, drink, and clothing as religion. I stubbornly think that is religion as a wedge.
