Why does a visit back home to the States fill me with dread? [1]

I find myself these days perfectly and comfortably tucked away into the rural landscape of East Anglia. Sure the UK has it’s problems with a painfully sluggish economy combined with an expensive cost of living but, it is relatively sane and orderly.
I have not been in the US for a couple of years but need to go back for some family things. And, I am terrified of what the next few years will bring us.
The world is shifting from a rules-based to a power-based order with growing tensions between liberal democratic societies and authoritarianism.
The view from the UK...
The US under President Trump is neither our reliable ally nor our friend. It is a superpower gone rogue
Trump’s new world is one in which American might is right, imperial territorial acquisition is legitimate and the international rule of law is woke.

The president-elect refused to rule out using force or economic coercion to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. He warned NATO members that they must spend 5% of GDP on defence if they want to continue to shelter under the US security umbrella. He called for the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the Gulf of America. He has also slightingly referred to Canada as "the 51st state" and called its prime minister "governor".

Trump’s imperialistic fever dream is more about laying the framework for am American exit from NATO than any Manifest Destiny. It is to cripple the post-war alliance and allow Russia and China free run.
