Mr. Brillig and I went out for dinner recently. As usual the food was fantastic and we love how warm and friendly the owners and staff are. With the check they always bring fortune cookies, and while I can’t eat them anymore I do love seeing what my fortune says. As this was our first dinner there in 2025, we joked it would set the tone for the year.
My fortune was the one you see above: “Trust in the divine timing of your life’s journey this year”. While I’m not a believer in an anthromorphic divine being, my personal brand of spirituality can interpret ‘divinity’ as that spark in all of us, in the Universe, that sometimes makes itself known in special ways. We all know that 2025 is going to be a turbulent year, one that even more than most we cannot predict or presume what our lives will be like. Personally, it is the year I turn the same as my Mom was when she died. While I won’t officially be older than she ever was until March 29 of NEXT year, this one is a biggie and I’m certainly trusting in something to get me through this year.
The Empty Fortune Cookie...
Then Mr. Brillig opened his fortune cookie, and quietly said “Mine doesn’t have a fortune”. Sure enough, it had no slip of divination, no relevatory words on the familiar small rectangle. It was an empty cookie. A cookie sans fortune.
“Oh well, I don’t get one”. I offered to share mine, but Mr. Brillig demurred. He then said (because remember, we’d been solemnly proclaiming this was going to set our 2025) “Either I’m UNfortunate, or I shall have no fortune this year”.
Perhaps because I’m pretty contemplative these days about how I will soon (T-minus 440 days) outlive both of my parents, I saw this lack of a physical fortune paper in a different light. Come March 30th 2026, my future is unwritten. I have nothing to compare it to, no “well when they were this old my folks did XYZ”. I’ll be in Uncharted Waters, so to speak. So I interpreted Mr. Brillig’s ephemeral, invisible fortune as “your future and fortune are undecided and unwritten! It’s ALL possible!”
What about you, dear reader… how would YOU interpret an empty fortune cookie? Mystical message from the cookie deities, or merely a machinery mishap? What else is going on with you on this last Monday night before it all changes? Take a look at tonight’s Tops, then come share your thoughts in the comments!
