Reality television star Carrie Underwood has received the honour of performing America the Beautiful at the inauguration of Donald Trump, who will serve a second non-consecutive term as President of the United States of America. The Before He Cheats singer cannot be any more ecstatic on the opportunity.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said in a statement. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Previously, Carrie Underwood has kept a facade of political neutrality. In 2008, amid enthusiasm for Barack Obama becoming the first black president, Carrie Underwood was not a fan of celebrities endorsing presidential candidates.

Carrie Underwood has a message for Oprah, Diddy, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and even Heidi and Spencer: Don’t publicly back candidates for office. “There is someone I do support, but I don’t support publicly,” she tells TV Guide, as excerpted by Just Jared. “I lose all respect for celebrities when they back a candidate. “It’s saying that the American public isn’t smart enough to make their own decisions,” she goes on. “I would never want anybody to vote for anything or anybody just because I told them to. “Music is where you go to get away from all the BS,” adds Underwood, who recently apologized for saying ex Tony Romo still calls her. “Whether it’s from politics or just the world around you, music should be an escape.”

During an interview with The Guardian in 2019, before a performance at Glastonbury, Underwood stated that, when it comes to political views, it’s not “black and white”.

It must be a strange time for such a quintessentially American artist to be visiting the wider world, especially one who is white, southern and religious. “I feel like more people try to pin me places politically,” she says carefully. “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.” She cites as an example the reaction to her recent single The Bullet, which looked at the long-running emotional impact of a shooting death. “Immediately people said ‘Oh you have a song about gun control!’” she sighs. “It was more about the lives that were changed by something terrible happening. And it does kind of bug me when people take a song, or take something I said and try to pigeonhole or force me to pick a side or something. It’s a discussion – a long discussion.”

In recent years, however, Carrie Underwood has been under fire for signalling allegiance to right-wing views, particularly anti-mask and anti-vaxx views during the COVID pandemic. Furthermore, Carrie’s spouse, former Ottawa Senators hockey player Mike Fisher, has shown solidarity with far-right figures.

And as expected, many Carrie Underwood fans who are not disgusted with the Right have been supportive.

She’s on the side of the majority of America right now, like it or not. Meanwhile Taylor Swift’s massively overrated ass thought she could sway votes by endorsing Kamala. She’s not as influential as she thinks, and her unhinged fans are the worst. Carrie can do whatever the hell she wants. She seems to have made a pretty good life for herself, didn’t jump from man to man for years like Hoe Swift, and has a family of her own with a respectable non attention seeking husband (Travis Kelce could learn from him). Leave her the fuck alone, you clowns! [...] The irrational ones are the ones taking a massive fit because Carrie Underwoord [sic] is performing a fucking song. They act like she lit a basket of puppies on fire and threw it off a cliff. I’m actually the one with a rational mindset here.

And there’s a reason why Republicans love American Idol; it is a reality television programme that boosts people that are the pinnacle of wholesome American values. Just think. Kelly Clarkson supporting spanking her children, with the comments made when her children were 3 and 1. Katharine McPhee bankrolling the GOP whilst giving “woke voters” shit because she cannot wear her jewels in Beverly Hills. And absolutely no shortage of such reality stars performing at Republican conventions. None.
