So... my main hobby over the years, since such a thing became possible ca. 1981 via the IBM PC and its many imitators, is PC gaming. I mostly play what you might call "thinking man's" games — that is adventure (like the seminal Colossal Cave Adventure) and role-playing (those group-participation pen and paper games with lots of funny dice adapted for the PC), like Planescape: Torment. I got burnt out on PC gaming about... holy crap, I just looked at my hobby site and it was almost 10 years ago that I last took a serious stab at a game. But I'm just getting back into it again to get over the *rump thing, and am playing Baldur's Gate, a 1998 role-playing game that I recently purchased the enhanced edition of (the original game that I have on CDs no longer runs on Windows 10 or 11) for a fiver on Good Old Games (GOG). In fact, since Windows XP(!) it's become very difficult to get an old game running on modern hardware, and this has become my de-facto hobby over the years. And that is what tonight's article is about: DOSBox. It emulates the venerable DOS operating system running on an old PC with an Intel x86 processor, VGA graphics (up to 640 x 480 screen resolution with a palette of 256 colours), and a variety of period sound cards, on modern hardware. And it runs flawlessly on: Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

I figure that most of you who like chess puzzles would also like a good solitaire game. Forget about the one with cards, although it's not bad for whiling away a few hours on a long flight. This one has me hooked for years now, even when I was burnt out on the big games. Behold, Mah Jongg -V-G-A-, along with complete instructions on where to get it for free (it's 'abandonware'), and how to get it running in DOSBox on Windows:

For the intrepid, just follow that link above to get to the home page of my hobby site. From there, scroll down to the blog entry dated 28th November, 2021 titled 'Best solitaire game ever?'. Any questions, just shoot me a PM on DK and I'll be glad to assist.

And now, on to tonight's puzzle. Below are links to an on-line board to help you work the puzzle, and the solution. But don't peek at the answer until you've made an honest attempt to solve the puzzle, or you'll spoil the fun!
