Yesterday, I attended an annual planning meeting with Indivisible of Colorado, known by its acronym ICAN, which serves as an inspiring reminder of the collective power we hold when we join together in a righteous cause. It is all too easy to feel despair and withdraw in the face of unnatural disasters like Trump and his minions, but I know that across the country, thousands of people are gathering weekly in small meetings just like this, organizing and planning engagement at every level of society to resist the Trump and Project 2025 agenda.
ICAN alone has over 14,000 members across Colorado, organizing locally to influence state and local legislation. The focus right now is on how to "Trump-proof" the state, cities, and municipalities. Nationally, Indivisible boasts over one million members, united in their opposition to harmful policies.
There is an undeniable realism about this David vs. Goliath fight, but this reality only strengthens our resolve. In the face of immense power, we have a shared determination that can turn the tide. Nationally, hundreds of organizations are working tirelessly to counter the Trump agenda. Among them are:
1 Community Organizing Groups like Indivisible, MoveOn, and the American Friends Service Committee
2 Legal Advocacy Organizations such as the ACLU, Lambda Legal, and Democracy Forward
3 Social Justice Movements including Black Lives Matter and the Women’s March
4 Policy Institutes like the Center for American Progress, the Brookings Institution, and the Economic Policy Institute
5 Political Action Committees (PACs), such as the American Bridge 21st Century PAC
6 Labor Unions like the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
7 Environmental Organizations like Greenpeace and the Sierra Club
8 Climate Change Organizations including Environmental Defense Fund and 350.org
9 Immigration Rights Organizations like United We Dream
10 Media Groups such as Media Matters for America
In addition to these national efforts, there are countless state-wide and local groups also aligned in opposition to Trump. These organizations, together, form a powerful web of grassroots resistance—a million points of light, fueled by millions of Americans, likely 15 to 25 million people. We are not alone in this struggle.
No matter where your passion lies, there is a place for you to connect, to serve, and to engage with a community of like-minded people determined to protect the country from this assault. Whether you care about social justice, the environment, labor rights, or any other cause, there is a space where you can make a difference.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously urged, “Don’t sleep through the revolution.” This is not a time for passivity, no matter your age or circumstances. I am in my seventh decade of life, and I will not let Trump destroy my country without doing my part—no matter how small it may seem—to fight back. This could be the revolution we've never had—a revolution not led by the elites of the American Revolution, but one driven by millions of people who are acting on behalf of the 75 million who voted for Kamala Harris. They are allied in opposition to Trump—collectively they embrace a compelling vision about what America should be.
Part of my motivation is inspired by Langston Hughes’ poem “Let America Be America Again” (See
https://poets.org/poem/let-america-be-america-again), written in 1935 in the midst of the Great Depression. He wrote, “Let America be America again. / Let it be the dream it used to be. / Let it be the pioneer on the plain / Seeking a home where he himself is free. / (America never was America to me.)” That line is especially meaningful—this Black poet urging us to create finally an American that would include and celebrate him—still unrealized. And when he writes, “Let America be America again,” he is referring to the dream not the reality. I am also inspired by the writings of Thomas Paine who envisioned a very different Revolution in 1776 than occurred. He advocated for social and economic reform, and if he had been successful, America would have been the better for it. Please consider joining the revolution.
