To Blame? [1]

Short version of a longer piece I’ll post on Medium.

The similarity of these two images might surprise you. The one above is of the Palisades fire, its aftermath. Courtesy of Newsweek. The one on the right, courtesy of London Museum, is of the Great Fire of London, in 1666.

There are other similarities. A strong wind helped the flames spread quickly. The London fire destroyed 13,200 houses, 87 churches, St. Paul's Cathedral, Guildhall, and the Royal Exchange. 85% of the population were left homeless.

Architectural similarities: Note in the top image how closely the houses are built together. This was also the case in the London fire. The flames leapt from house to house.

Further, the London houses — now built of brick — were at the time built of wood, as were the houses in Los Angeles.

Other factors in the LA fire: Overhead power lines dangling from wooden poles. Transformers full of inflammable oil sitting on those same poles. High winds rubbing wires together = sparks. Reportedly, arsonists: 5 people have been arrested including a woman found setting fire to a hillside and a man carrying a propane torch.

It’s to be hoped the same lessons will be learned and houses will be rebuilt in non-flammable materials and power lines put safely underground.
