Protest without Illusions
The inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20th stands as a stark symbol of an escalating crisis for the working people, not just in the United States but globally. This event does not merely represent a change of political guard; it heralds a potential increase in policies detrimental to the interests of the many for the benefit of the few.
Trump's promises and actions suggest a future fraught with peril: the mass deportation of immigrants, turning trade into a battleground that could destabilize economies worldwide, and the shadow of military aggression against neighbors like Mexico. His rhetoric has included notions as absurd as annexing Canada or seizing Greenland and the Panama Canal, which underline an imperialistic approach to international relations.
These policies, if enacted, would not only exacerbate economic inequality but also threaten international peace. The electoral system has shown itself incapable of curbing such tendencies, as it often serves the interests of those in power rather than the populace. The only force capable of halting this destructive path is the collective action of the working class.
Mass strikes, not the ballot box, could disrupt the machinery of such policies. By withholding labor, the workers can demonstrate their indispensable role in society, bringing to a standstill the very mechanisms that would enact these threats. Only through such unity and direct action can we hope to dismantle the illusions of progress through elections and build a world where the rights and dignity of all are upheld.
"Politics is not arguing with people you disagree with, but finding people you agree with, getting together, and doing things.” Noel Ignatiev
