New Day Cafe: Dinner Party [1]

Good morning, Newdists! When I was “contracted” to write this diary, I was asked to post about coffee mugs. I’ll still do that at some point, since I’m your new Sunday diarist! But this morning, I thought I’d post about last night’s dinner.

The BF and I recently made friends with another gay couple in the area, and we’ve really hit it off. We went out to eat last weekend, and we thought it would be fun if, rather than going out again, we all cooked dinner this weekend. I don’t know how we decided on an Italian-inspired dinner, but that’s what we went with. We each had a role to play. The day before, the BF made polenta and tiramisu. Early in the day yesterday, I started on the main dish, which was pork ragú. So by the time our friends arrived, the main components of dinner were already pretty much done. They were in charge of the appetizers: stuffed mushrooms and caprese skewers.

About a week ago, the guy at the vape shop sold me a 200mg “space cake” brownie. Those vape shop employees can be aggressive salespeople. I thought it would be fun for a party, but I wasn’t planning to eat it last night—that was the BF’s idea. But long story short, we partook of the space cake, which took effect about halfway through appetizer preparation. That’s when things really got interesting. But we were able to finish the job...barely.

I’m not sure he should be playing with fire

My virgin frozen limeade...my part was done, so I just stood back and watched

These stuffed mushrooms were THE BEST—I could have eaten the whole plate

The caprese skewers were also delicious!

All four of us are Instagram people (that’s where we met them!), so there was a spirited debate over the best way to plate the food. Fortunately, we had four plates and therefore four different blank canvases. This was voted the winner:

Pork ragú with seared polenta and a side of roasted broccoli that I tossed with hot honey

By the way, if you’re wondering about the pork ragú, this is the recipe I used (although we clearly didn’t go with the “creamy polenta” part). It’s really simple, but delicious. I added a big drizzle of balsamic vinegar at the end, which I highly recommend you do as well if you make this.

There was still dessert! And let me tell you, after the space cake, the tiramisu really hit. I will say that this was not the only piece I had, but I won’t reveal the true number of pieces I consumed (a lady never tells).

After dinner, we figured out how to use a projector to create a little “theater” outside, and we watched a movie in the hot tub. The movie projected onto the garage wall, and we had a speaker next to us. It was like going to a drive-in!

All in all, it was a successful dinner party! A lot better than this one:

On a closing note, I’ll just say that I’m happy to be hosting New Day Cafe again. Sunday mornings are actually my favorite time to be in the cafe, so this is a perfect fit. But I have a request: Please don’t expect that much of me! Like, this diary was high-effort compared to what you’ll get some mornings. I just want to set expectations low so y’all won’t be disappointed, LOL. Otherwise, I’m glad to be back and I look forward to spending Sunday mornings here!
