LA Fires Check In - FEMA Locations Mandeville Canyon/Palisades Fire update and Wind Forecast [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-01-12

This continues to be a stressful week for everyone in SoCal.

Let’s use this post for Disaster Check In purposes, sharing of resources and information, and a chance for those impacted by the continuing immediate Wind and Fire threat to share our experiences.

(Anyone from any location, please share, but please help us keep our focus on our immediate survival.)

An update on that terrifying approach the Palisades Fire made toward Brentwood last evening after the cut.

Last evening the Palisades Fires shifted direction and was approaching Brentwood and threatening UCLA and other surrounding areas.

Apologies for starting out with an X post but this is a short video by Eric Scott, Fire Captain II and Paramedic and Information Officer for LA Fire Department. This is a quick video to update that situation.

Here is the Watch Duty event page for Palisades Fire.

Wind Event Continues — Bracing for it today

L.A. is bracing for the return of more powerful winds as fires continue to burn Firefighters are bracing for more Santa Ana winds as they continue to battle multiple fires in Los Angeles that have left several people dead and burned thousands of structures. The gusty winds that helped propel the fires are forecast to continue through Tuesday and likely Wednesday across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, with low humidity creating critical fire conditions, according to the National Weather Service. "#SantaAnaWind combined with dry air and very dry vegetation will maintain high WILDFIRE RISK through Wednesday," the NWS Los Angeles office wrote in a post Saturday on X. NPR News

There are also updates lower on that page.

For those wishing to learn more about these weather events, I have a piece here from Daniel Swain that he posted on January 4 As extreme California precipitation dipole persists, a high-end offshore wind/fire weather event may unfold in SoCal this week. Again, it’s from Jan 4, but there is a lot of background information offered there about these wind events.

This ABC 7 News page (in quote below) has a scroll of stories and worth reading. Here is the present fire situation here from this morning:

Assholes Do Vex Us!!!!!!!

As many of you know, Canada was decent enough to lend us a super scooper to fight these fires and some freedom-loving American invaded its airspace with a drone and poked an ungrateful hole in it. Elon Musk proclaims the freedom to bore and many proclaim their freedom to drone, but this wasn’t helpful.

FBI working to piece together drone that damaged super scooper while battling Palisades Fire Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) are put in place by the FAA to alert pilots of areas of restricted air travel due to a hazardous condition, a special event, or a general warning for the entire FAA airspace. TFRs are currently in place over the Palisades and Eaton fires, allowing firefighting aircraft the airspace they need. They apply to all aircraft, including drones. Drone videos of destroyed neighborhoods are spreading over social media, despite the threat of jail time. "We'll work backwards through investigative means to try and recreate that drone and figure out what company owns that drone and who it was assigned to," said Davis. ABC News Los Angeles

And of course we have other assholes flexing their vex muscles, including some setting fires.

Woman, 60, arrested for alleged arson near Leo Carrillo State Park Gloria Lynn Mandich allegedly started a fire near Leo Carrillo State Park in Los Angeles County, according to California State Parks. The arrest was first reported by the Acorn newspaper. “The fire was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department,” officials added. KTLA News Los Angeles

However, I’d like to ask everyone to be very careful and triple check any accounts of people setting fires and HERE IS WHY.

Our local neighborhood chats are being besieged by people claiming that there are people setting fires. Some of those are based on real accounts. However, there are also two other groups of people spreading this information. One group are people who believe it and share entire lists of these incidents, some of which have been debunked by local police and are disputed by other witnesses. This is understandable.

But there are nefarious players right now trying to stir up right wing talking points and claim that these fires are being set on purpose by agents of the Democratic party or authorities. On that, please visit The Critical Mind’s post Mel Gibson wonders if LA fires were ‘commissioned’ (apparently no disasters are ‘natural’ anymore) to see how this bullshit is being spread on national TV by people with nefarious intent.

Here is a little more information as of now about these ongoing investigations and the spread on social media.

Are arsonists responsible for the Los Angeles wildfires? “You don’t need a gang of arsonists to go out there and be starting fires because nature is taking care of that for you,” said Scott Fischer, a retired federal law enforcement arson investigator. “There are arsonists out there,” he added, “but are there a band of arsonists running around Los Angeles right now? Not likely.” Copycat arson is a known phenomenon, however. The experts said they wouldn’t be surprised if one of the smaller fires that broke out after the Palisades blaze was intentionally set. **** The prospect of arsonists torching Los Angeles gained traction on social media Thursday when a group of people in Woodland Hills detained a man they suspected of setting a trash fire. The man was arrested, but there was not enough probable cause to charge him with arson, police officials said Friday. He was arrested on a felony probation violation instead. NBC News

I saw one BlueSky (tweet?) that listed several incidents, one of which was debunked. Just please be careful sharing any social media post that purports to know for sure that these incidents were true. It was shared here on this site.

These false reports create panic on the ground and wastes our immediate attention needed for survival.

In addition to a lot of people trying to loot and steal and dupe people, we have a lot of people out there trying to blow their hot political wind into our ongoing disaster.

So please be careful with what you share.

Other News

For this item, I invite people to please start another post for the political debate on this executive order from Newsom. This is a Disaster Check In site and please let’s leave long-term and short-term political debate for other posts/comment threads so that we can focus here on immediate survival.

Governor Newsom signs executive order to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger LOS ANGELES — Governor Gavin Newsom today signed an executive order to suspend permitting and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act to allow victims of the recent fires to restore their homes and businesses faster. If you haven’t already, you may wish to visit my Friday post LA Fires Check In, Resource Sharing (Between the Storms), and a bit about Altadena (w/updates). There is information there (in the post and comments) that may be helpful and informative.

I also wrote about the California Insurance Commission’s moratorium on dropping coverage in impacted areas at One Year Moratorium set by Cal Insurance Commissioner (protecting homeowners who lost homes to fire).

Also, on Thursday I wrote about my experience trying to figure out whether fires had actually advanced based on a fake/AI photo shared here at DK and left up for many hours at Please don't share AI/fake photos of LA icon sites burning (we're trying to survive here).

I hope everyone will read this. I wrote it to provide a meaningful example of the immediate harm and threat to survival spreading misinformation via AI/fake photos here.

UPDATE: And here is a Google Doc with resources.

Final request

My internet may go down today so I may be out of touch.

Please be safe.

Thank you.
