Should I Stay or Should I Go
Most KTKers will be staying put in the next few years, but possibilities and fantasies might be interesting.
I know several families who have moved to other countries specifically to avoid what they see (or guess) is coming. A move is impossible for most folks, due to financial and/or family obligations.
Ahead of the rush:
With an estimated 9.5 million US citizens embracing an expatriate life, the American expat community is on the rise. Regardless of their global location, these citizens maintain their voting rights and are obligated to fulfill their US Federal tax responsibilities.
Will those sweet sweet Social Security checks keep coming?
I had a recent extensive conversation with a woman who was considering options. She has a great job and likes it in California. Her European husband (retired) wants to leave. They travel widely and have friends all over, so they have options. On her list, number one is Portugal.
From its great weather, culture, low crime rates, people, and food to its affordable cost of living, natural beauty and health system, expats love almost everything about the country. As a way to encourage foreigners to move to Portugal, the government even offers free Portuguese language classes at schools throughout the country. Portugal also offers a digital nomad visa, and many locals have a high level of English that attracts expats.
Others on many lists are Spain, Taiwan (not relaxing any more), Sweden, Germany (heading right-wing), Canada and Mexico (soon to be U S territories), Singapore (pricy). For me, in my imagination, Italy looks good. Both family and friends have traveled there and wish they could move. And after two trips to Vietnam I believe I would enjoy living there.
We’re elderly; just going to stay here, fight the good fight, and keep on truckin.
