Alice für Deutschland – the dark past has returned [1]

Alice Weidel, a huge admirer of Elon Musk, has been selected as the candidate of the far-right AfD party (Germany’s very own MAGA) for German chancellor.
During the nomination event it became clear that the AfD is moving ever farther to the right. Weidel said for example, “Well, if it’s supposed to be called remigration then let’s call it remigration!” Remigration, the far right’s code word for the expulsion of foreigners, was not mentioned in the party platform, and up to now only the most radical members of AfD have dared to use it in public, such as neo-Nazi Björn Höcke.
But Weidel shouted it out from the stage — to thunderous applause.
The audience began chanting “Alice für Deutschland! Alice für Deutschland!” — a phrase which, acoustically, sounds almost exactly like Alles für Deutschland, the slogan used by the SA during the Nazi era. It is a criminal offense to use it in public, and Höcke has paid large fines in the past for doing so.
Höcke, in his book from 2019, called for a “large-scale remigration project of well-tempered cruelty.” Last year, he said that Germany could live well with a 20–30 % lower population.
This, of course, echoes Trump’s vow to kick all the undocumented out of the U.S.—I’m just not sure which plan would be more devastating to the respective country.
But remigration wasn’t the only thing that triggered a frenzied response from the faithful at that AfD nomination event. Weidel also made it clear what she thinks of alternative energy sources, shouting out that the AfD will “Tear down all the windmills! Down with the windmills of shame!”
This was followed by a vow to “close all Gender Studies departments and throw out the professors!”
I could go on, but you get the idea.
Sorry for any typos in the above, I’m writing this in state of mild shock even though it’s not actually that surprising. It has all been hinted at before at various times and places.
But when everything is stated so openly and unambiguously, and to thunderous applause, I get a queasy feeling in my stomach. How much farther will they go? Will they start smashing the shop windows of Turkish greengrocers and Syrian hairdressers?
The AfD is already under observation by the federal intelligence services, and the time may not be far off when they ban it completely.
