James Earl Carter Junior gave this nation a lifetime of service. More than that, he served the entire world. He wasn’t *just* a politican, or a US Naval Academy graduate, or a submarine commander, or a Navy Nuclear engineer, or a peanut farmer, or a governor, or an author; he wasn’t *only* a diplomat, a leader in international election integrity, a man who sought to bring a broader and fairer peace to all he knew and everyone he hadn’t yet met.
He embodied the principles of his faith as no other public figure — and in particular no public figure claiming to lead that faith in my lifetime — has done. He walked the walk of the Beatitudes every day. We shall not see his like again, I fear; and I know that we are diminished as a nation with his loss. There may be, somewhere in the USA, another person who gave as strong an example of following Christ as Jimmy Carter did. Maybe. But that person is unsung in our public consciousness.
Let us never forget.
