x I went to the Jimmy Carter public visitation in the Capitol Rotunda last night. My friend and I arrived around 9pm. It was below 20 degrees with the wind chill. Wait time? 3.5 hours. Thousands of people were waiting outside in the freezing cold for hours late at night to honor Jimmy Carter. — Charlotte Clymer (@charlotteclymer.bsky.social) 2025-01-09T18:13:30.443Z

Newfoundland has a fleet of these that we routinely sent to America every year to help them fight their wild fires. That is who we are. Anita Bryant, singer and anti-gay rights crusader, dies aged 84
Anita Bryant, a multi-Grammy nominated singer and former Miss Oklahoma who later became a high-profile campaigner against gay rights in America, has died at the age of 84. In an announcement on Thursday, Bryant’s family announced that Bryant died at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on 16 December 2024. “May Anita’s memory and her faith in eternal life through Christ comfort all who embraced her,” her family said. The Getty Villa survived LA's firestorms while everything around it burned, revealing a key lesson for homeowners
As the Palisades and Eaton fires burned through thousands of acres on Tuesday, razing nearly 2,000 homes , the iconic Getty Villa remained standing with minor damage. Meanwhile, homes and trees around it went up in flames. "We deeply appreciate the tireless work and dedication of the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, and other agencies," the museum said in a statement Wednesday morning. The Getty Villa is part of the J. Paul Getty Trust, which includes the largest endowment of any museum in the world, estimated at more than $8 billion in 2023. It houses the trust's collection of Ancient Greek and Roman art.
Spacecraft buzzes Mercury's north pole and beams back stunning photos
A spacecraft has beamed back some of the best close-up photos yet of Mercury’s north pole. The European and Japanese robotic explorer swooped as close as 183 miles (295 kilometers) above Mercury's night side before passing directly over the planet's north pole. The European Space Agency released the stunning snapshots Thursday, showing the permanently shadowed craters at the top of of our solar system’s smallest, innermost planet. Cameras also captured views of neighboring volcanic plains and Mercury's largest impact crater, which spans more than 930 miles (1,500 kilometers). This was the sixth and final flyby of Mercury for the BepiColombo spacecraft since its launch in 2018. The maneuver put the spacecraft on course to enter orbit around Mercury late next year. The spacecraft holds two orbiters, one for Europe and the other for Japan, that will circle the planet's poles.

x These days are not good at all for so many people around here, so I'll try to brighten the mood, even for a second, with a new Hubble image! 🔭 This is the NGC-5530 galaxy, as seen by Hubble earlier today.
