The great gulf that is opening twixt USA and Europe [1]

As USA heads off into the choppy waters- the raging tempest- of a second Rtump term, Europe shakes it’s head in disbelief that -albeit narrowly- knowing all that they do, a plurality of US voters has decided that the corrupt, twisted, liar and his henchmen should head the the most powerful nation on planet earth into chaos, fear, instability and despair. Rtump. Americas gift. Thanks guys!

There is a world where socialism is not a dirty word, where guns do not outnumber people and where-not content with spending a good deal of time shooting each other-you insist on providing the means whereby the rest of us can shoot each other too. America, the ‘masters of war’, by miles the biggest exporters and producers of weapons on earth. $$kerching! The arms trade will love President Biden, business as usual plus the ‘Ukraine bonus’ which has had the effect of somehow morally legitimising the grisly trade for profit in death and suffering. Then there’s Gaza! The greatest stain of all on the Biden Presidency, an extraordinary, prolonged and shameful practical and political support for the systematic targeting of a civilian population and it's infrastructure.

On Kos the President still enjoys favourability and support, at a far higher level than Dems as a whole, and an astronomically higher level than Americans in general. In Europe mention the Biden word and people laugh. OK, he was the candidate -perhaps the only candidate-who could have beaten Rtump in 2020 and to his credit he headed a stable Administration with considerable legislative achievements. The idea however that the President himself singlehandedly steered these achievements, energetically and coherently dotting between the issues is a bit suspect. The truth is, I think, that -simply put-he was the figurehead of a competent Administration.

The greatest challenge and biggest deal of all was to ensure that Rtump did not win a second term. The President failed; given his physical and cognitive decline was he ever really a viable candidate for a second term? It is hard to escape concluding that his stubborn determination-even after the debate-to hang on until the bitter end before reluctantly passing the baton to MVP Harris 109 days out from the vote-was determinative of the outcome. Was there any candidate in those circumstance who could have prevailed? Seriously, 109 days to plan , construct and deliver winning a Presidential campaign from scratch? We will probably never know to what extent the wise counsel of Hunter Biden that his father remain in the race confirmed the President’s delusional belief-which seemingly he still holds- that he could/would win.

If it is true that a women simply cannot be elected to Presidential office in USA-are you really that backward?- then the President’s pick of MVP Harris was hopeless in the first place, given that a younger VP would be the likely candidate to succeed him.

So, here we are, God help us all! Multiple chasms will emerge between Europe and Rtumps America: Ukraine, Russia, Facebook fact checking! Then there’s Greenland. can anyone suggest how that may work out? Call me crazy, but I could see the incoming Administration flexing military muscle against this Danish outpost. Would Europe come to the Defence of Greenland? Sanctions? Boots on the ground? (Probably not). There will be a grim fascination in seeing how Europe responds to the big bully across the water.
