SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment) is a twin satellite mission developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to mature technologies for orbital rendezvous, docking and formation flying.
Two 220 kg satellites were launched on Dec 30 and are currently in a 470 km orbit at 55° inclination. The distance between the two has varied between 12 and 2 km.
On Jan 9, the satellites will approach other and attempt docking at a relative speed of ~10 mm/s.
This is a visualization of the docking of the two ISRO SpaDex satellites - the Chaser (SDX01) and the Target (SDX02).
The docking system is similar to but smaller than the International Docking System Standard used by other agencies for human missions.
After docking, the SpaDex satellites will demonstrate electrical power transfer and then separate and go their own way to complete their missions over the next 2 years. SDX01 contains a High Resolution Camera (HRC); SDX02 contains a Miniature Multispectral (MMX) payload and a Radiation Monitor (RadMon). These instruments will be used for hi-res imaging, natural resource monitoring, vegetation studies and on-orbit radiation environment measurements. Now let’s put our minds together and solve today’s puzzle composed in 1972 by noted Belgian-born American chess player George Koltanowski (1903 - 2000). Possessed of an incredibly powerful memory, Koltanowski set the world's blindfold record on 20 September 1937, in Edinburgh, by playing 34 chess games simultaneously while blindfolded. Over 52 years, he published an estimated 19,000 chess columns for the San Francisco Chronicle. P.S.
