Renewable Tuesday: Carter's Truths, Reagan's Lies [1]

No cartel controls the sun. Its energy will not run out. It will not pollute the air; it will not poison our waters. The question is no longer whether solar energy works. We know it works.

Jimmy Carter, quoted by Bill McKibben (@billmckibben.bsky.social) January 6, 2025 at 6:48 PM on BlueSky, in the Solar Energy feed.

Wow. At its peak today, renewable energy provided about 45 percent of Texas's power today. When the winds were highest, wind power was supplying *40 percent* of Texas's fuel mix (a load of about 22 GW!). Clean, patriotic domestic energy benefits our great state! www.gridstatus.io/graph/fuel-m...

😡😥Heating accounts for 18% of UK CO2, a UK gas boiler is responsible for more CO2 emissions than 7 transatlantic flights/year.

Even though it's estimated; heat pumps, solar panels and battery storage would save more than £46,600 over a 25-year mortgage.

West Australia is powering on with Wind Energy.

It is a shame there is a highly vocal minority spreading copious misinformation to stifle a wind farm in the East Augusta area.

- Microgrids are needed !

[image or embed] — Mike Barker - MicroGrids Matter ? (@microgridmike.bsky.social) January 6, 2025 at 11:26 PM

“We're seeing universities, for example, becoming a microgrid and hospitals,” he said. “That's increasingly the case for commercial enterprises, too. From 2016 to 2023, microgrid installation nearly doubled nationally … in Texas …from around 20 to 300 installations.”

More Texans are investing in microgrids to avoid winter power outages

From 2016 to 2023, microgrid installation nearly doubled nationally, said Prithvi Kalkunte, an economic programmer with the Dallas Fed. While in Texas it’s “grown exponentially since like 2016,” Kalkunte said — from around 20 to 300 installations.

Stolen e-bike batteries could be made worthless if Bosch was less greedy

The Battery Lock function is coming this summer, but only to Bosch Flow Plus subscribers — which is dumb. The mechanical locks protecting removable batteries can be defeated with force, costing owners anywhere from $300 to $1,000 — in the case of e-bikes built around Bosch systems — to replace the stolen battery, in addition to any costs required to repair the broken housing. Bosch says that Battery Lock supports several digital keys that can be used simultaneously — in the form of the Bosch Flow app and Kiox 300 and Kiox 500 bike displays — or disabled to share batteries with family and friends. The digital lock is compatible with all batteries in the Bosch smart system, including DualBatteries and the PowerMore 250 Range Extender. Once activated, Battery Lock will engage automatically when a Bosch-based e-bike is turned off. If a locked battery is inserted into another e-bike with the smart system, it automatically deactivates its motor support and renders the entire e-bike unusable for the thief.

I don’t know why this is in this feed.

Anyway, #NoNewNukes.

Ok, chumps: Wait until the utilities companies turn off householders’ rooftop solar each day so ☢️they can pump out their expensive, inflexible nuclear powered electricity. Who wants to lose their own rooftop electricity to make Dutton’s risky nuclear work? And pay? Definitely not me!

The claim that solar panels harm food production is false. Exciting new research shows they can boost crop yields, particularly in arid regions, by shading soil & retaining moisture. This approach, called agrivoltaics, combines solar energy with farming, creating a sustainable food & power system

[image or embed] — EarthlyEducation (@earthlyeducation.bsky.social) January 4, 2025 at 7:56 PM

There is too much common sense in these findings. 😉 “In these cases, solar panels shade soil, prevent evapotranspiration and improve pasture production, suggesting that agrivoltaics would be more beneficial in regions with greater aridity,” www.pv-magazine-australia.com/2024/12/19/a...
