Nazi Lebensraum 2.0: Trump proposes annexing Canada, Panama & Greenland [1]

The guy is fucking nuts. In a Tuesday Mar-a-Lago news conference seemingly imagined by a satirist on acid, Trump went full neo-Nazi. The man, who had promised no foreign entanglements, pleasured himself with the thought of invading Panama and Greenland; and using an economic Anschluss to conscript Canada into the US as the 51st state. Lebensraum anyone?
The man who would be King Lear spent part of his day answering questions from the media he so detests — but will not stop talking to. One reporter asked the small-brained, big-mouth dotard if he could assure the public that he would not use military force against Panama or Greenland — respectively a country and a dependency Trump has threatened to absorb. The war-dodger rattled his saber and answered:
“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two, but I can say this, we need them for economic security.”
When later asked if his annexation plans included invading Canada, he claimed our northern neighbors shouldn’t worry. There were no invasion plans. Instead, he would rely only on "economic force” to convert a sovereign nation to an American territory. Channeling his inner marketeer, he said of the US taking control of Canada:
“That would really be something,”
He expanded his thinking:
“You get rid of that artificially drawn line, and you take a look at what that looks like. And it would also be much better for national security. They’re great, but we’re spending hundreds of billions here to protect it."
He did not grasp the hypocrisy of spending millions to maintain an artificially drawn line in the South while casually dismissing the sanctity of a similar geographical fact in the North. We should not be surprised, Trump has trouble grasping anything that cannot be summed up by grunting.
He also did not explain what “hundreds of billions” he was referring to. Apparently, it had something to do with subsidies and trade deficits. However, no Gibberish-to-English translator was on hand, so his meaning remains opaque.
Gone are the days when Trump’s crack pipe fantasy was a border wall paid for by Mexico. That nonsense was doomed by incompetence at the top. Second-rate contractors on the job. And a Congress ready to pay lip service to insanity, but unwilling to fund it . Unabashed by that failure, Trump has repeatedly threatened to invade Mexico, ostensibly to root out and destroy drug barons.
But as always his Grand Guignol fantasies were unburdened with details. He has promised broad action but kept the fine points of his strategy so closely guarded that no one, including its chief sponsor, knows what they are. He’s safe. No MAGA cultist needs to know and no MAGA politician dares to ask. And it seems that the MSM has decided that digging into the news is too hard — and their job is now merely to act as stenographers taking notes.
That was then. But now Trump’s schoolyard bully delusions are hemispheric. He’s your belligerent, bigoted, drunk uncle with the nuclear codes. I imagine the top brass at the Pentagon are war gaming a response to the greatest threat they face. A domestic terrorist in the Oval Office.
The good news is that this is all gum-flapping. Trump may believe his own bullshit. If that’s the case his ambitions will be crushed by the absurdity of it all. On the other hand, and equally likely, he’s just saying stuff to wind up the media, make headlines, and get talked about.
In which case, mission accomplished. And no damage done — except to America’s already shaky reputation as a grown-up country. We’ve been here before.
In November 2016, America awoke to realize a dangerous man would soon be President. People feared existential catastrophe was the inevitable outcome. Then Bozo proved that, for all his rhetoric, the damage he did was not as extensive as feared.
Do not get me wrong. America was diminished. Women’s reproductive rights were incinerated. The deficit exploded. The wealth gap expanded. Healthcare remained an expensive morass. It was the worst of times. But there was no knockout blow. And here we are again.
White House Nightmare: The Sequel may be equally disastrous. But the country can take comfort that the damage will be limited by incompetence, will be reversible, and may start as soon as 2026.
I have no idea how any of Trump’s plans are supposed to work. And you know he doesn’t. The man is a lame duck before he even enters office. And I think Republican politicians, while they publicly bend the knee, are already looking to a post-Trump 2028. Call it a cross between a confederacy of dunces and the gang who couldn’t shoot straight.
(Note: I know some readers believe there will be no more elections. I don’t think that’s the problem. Trump may want no time limit on his term. But I suspect the GOP would rather have elections they can try to rig.)
Regardless, it’s a farce.
