Edmund Dulac: The Snow Queen (1911)
Good evening, Kibitzers!
I hope those in the path of the snow and ice and windstorms and such are all recovered! Some places were getting a really dangerous-looking coating of ice on Sunday. On the other hand, Californians have been facing dangerous Santa Ana winds today, so for them we must wish for no fires as well as safety from wind-caused destruction! [Tuesday: I’m seeing that serious evacuations are taking place around L.A., but I don’t know the area — please weigh in in the comments if you have information.]
I’ve been noting with interest some models that predict a big snowstorm for Boston over the coming weekend. The area’s National Weather Service page does not currently acknowledge in any way that there is the tiniest chance of more than partial cloudiness at that time, which I find irritating, but it’s far enough out for me to just take the position that they’re wrong and will surely be embarrassed at what a big snowstorm they utterly failed to predict. It’s not that that kind of thing works, but it makes me feel better until the moment of truth when my desired result declines to materialize.
So, this diary! We visited quite a few YouTube channels in 2024! But of course, YouTube channels don't quit posting interesting content just because we've already looked at them in this series. Here are new offerings from some channels we saw on Tuesday nights last year. I’ll link my original diaries, where you can find whatever information/links/videos I posted at the time.
Commercial Breakdown: On Stephen Colbert's Late Show, the interesting guest musicians start playing with the band and ::boooo!:: they cut to commercial. Luckily, sometimes they post those performances later as separate videos, as part of a playlist linked in that diary. Here are two good performances that were posted after our June visit.
Tarriona "Tank" Ball: Remember [4:05]
Grace Bowers: Them Changes [5:21]
The Haggis Wildlife Foundation: This somewhat snarky organization has made the most of AI to spin tales of a little animal called a haggis that roams the Scottish countryside. We met them in September, and they have issued a video for the new year: Thank You From The Haggis Wildlife Foundation. [1:00]
What If: Randall Munroe, creator of the xkcd web comic, wrote a book called What If, and it has a YouTube channel that keeps adding new reports of the actual consequences of rather ridiculous imagined situations. What if a glass of water were LITERALLY half empty? [4:19]
Katze im Kajak: In November we met Louis, the big fluffy German cat who lives in the wetlands near Berlin and enjoys taking command of his human’s kayak voyages. His latest video, Snow Day with Louis and the Foxes, features a cozy little fire in the backyard fire pit, and some local wildlife. [4:33]
Bach to the Future: Baroque musician "Hiro Watanabe" started playing video duets with himself during Covid. While he has resumed performing with others, he still posts some cleverly-edited ensemble performances that are all him. Guillaume Dufay (1397 - 1474): En triumphant de Cruel Dueil, a song for 3 voices. [3:49]
Fashion Goes To the Dogs (and Cats): YouTube channel The Maitrix continues to leverage AI to bring us the latest in domestic-animal couture. Here’s Cats on the Catwalk. [2:10]
Techniquely: Chef Lan Lam has been posting new videos to her series; here are a couple of interesting ones.
Which Frozen Ingredients You Should Cook With [7:08]
How to Get Crispy Potatoes Without Deep Frying [7:38]
They're Good Dogs, Brent: Matt Nelson's beloved WeRateDogs channel presents their Dogs of 2024 montage. [10:49]
Middle Aged Dad Jam Band: We're closing with this very polished L.A. garage band, because they continue to load up their channel with new entertaining performances and I'm struggling to pare down my selections. Caution: dad jokes ahead!
Vienna (Billy Joel) - with guest accordionist. [3:55]
Touch Me (The Doors) - with bonus trivia at the end. [4:12]
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (The Police), positioned here for its dramatic ending. [5:37]
[END]
