Here we go again. Remember: No, Trump wasn't "confused" about the New Orleans attack. www.publicnotice.co/…

✂️ It’s bad enough to have a president-elect rushing to spread misinformation based on the shoddy reporting of a propaganda network. But what’s worse is that Trump was not just confused or misinformed. He spread the lie that the attacker was an immigrant because it confirms his priors and advances his political goals. He wants to harm immigrants and smearing them as violent criminals is a way to build support for massive human rights violations. Stigmatizing marginalized people as criminals has been a core tactic to build fascist power in the past, and stigmatizing migrants as criminals has been a core tactic for MAGA. Sometimes demagogues like Trump will highlight real instances of crime, but often they just make things up. Either way, the strategy is part of a larger false narrative — that narrative being that some group is particularly prone to violence and criminality, and that the safety of the majority requires them to be targeted, imprisoned, or exterminated. MAGA isn’t confused. They are liars. MAGA in general, and Trump in particular, make little pretense of caring about facts when there’s a bigoted narrative to pursue. The eagerness with which Republicans (falsely) bellowed that the attacker was an immigrant was grotesque, indecent, and shameless.

We didn't need this eight years ago. We certainly don't need it now. What gives? Oh, right. Amazon licenses Melania Trump documentary, as Jeff Bezos cozies up to president-elect. www.cnbc.com/…

The movie, first reported by Fox News.com, came to light weeks after a Wall Street Journal report that Jeff Bezos, the founder and executive chairman of Amazon, planned to donate $1 million to the inaugural fund of President-elect

Judicial body won't refer Clarence Thomas to Justice Department over ethics lapses. www.nbcnews.com/…

A judicial organization that sets national policy for federal courts has rejected a request from two Democratic lawmakers to refer Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to the Justice Department over free travel and gifts from wealthy benefactors that were largely omitted from his financial disclosure forms. The group, the Judicial Conference, sent identical letters Thursday to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who chairs the Judiciary subcommittee on federal courts, and Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., the ranking member of the Judiciary subcommittee on courts, who asked it in 2023 to refer Thomas to the attorney general for investigation following a ProPublica report on free travel and gifts to Thomas by billionaire Harlan Crow and others. Judicial Conference Secretary Robert J. Conrad Jr. said Thomas had filed amended financial disclosures "that address several issues identified in your letter" and argued that there is legal uncertainty over whether the Judicial Conference has the authority to refer complaints about Supreme Court justices. "Because the Judicial Conference does not superintend the Supreme Court and because any effort to grant the Conference such authority would raise serious constitutional questions, one would expect Congress at a minimum to state any such directive clearly. But no such express directive appears in this provision," Conrad said.

In yet another continuing saga, Ethics troubles for GOP’s Andy Ogles become even more serious. www.msnbc.com/…

Republican Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee was already one of Congress’ more controversial members when things took a torn for the worse in the fall of 2023. WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville, reported that the congressman’s finance reports showed he had made a $320,000 personal loan to his campaign. That might not have been especially problematic — candidates often make these kinds of loans — were it not for the fact that Ogles’ financial disclosures suggested he didn’t have $320,000. Months later, the GOP lawmaker effectively conceded that his earlier claims weren’t true — he said he’d actually loaned his campaign $20,000, not $320,000 — though it remained an open question where Ogles received the rest of the money. It was against this backdrop that The Tennessean reported: After a preliminary review, an independent federal agency has recommended the U.S. House Ethics Committee conduct a full investigation into U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles’ campaign finances, centering on a $320,000 contribution reported by Ogles’ 2022 congressional campaign. The Office of Congressional Ethics made the recommendation [last] week. Ogles and his wife did not cooperate with the agency’s preliminary review and the office is recommending the couple be subpoenaed as part of the investigation. The same report added, “Ogles’ office has not returned a request for comment.” If the Ethics Committee follows suit, it would not be the only investigation Ogles is facing: As an Axios report noted, the Republican also “disclosed last year that the FBI seized his cellphone and personal email as part of an apparent federal investigation into his finances.”
