Police arrested Brianna Boston, a woman from Florida and a mother of three, for allegedly making threats against a health insurance company. The incident occurred during a phone call with Blue Cross Blue Shield regarding a denied medical claim. Boston reportedly stated, "Delay, deny, depose. You people are next." This phrase was also found on shell casings at the crime scene of the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Boston has been charged with making threats to commit a mass shooting or act of terrorism. Apparently, she admitted to making the statement but claimed she did not intend any harm and was simply frustrated with the insurance company. Boston told authorities that she used the phrase because it was in the news and she does not own any firearms. However, she did express strong negative feelings towards healthcare insurance companies, calling them "evil" and saying they "deserve karma". Her bond was set at $100,000, and several GoFundMe pages were created to support her release, although most were taken down.
A well-received diary from the other day expressed support for Brianna Boston. I have a different opinion.
1. Don’t say to anyone, “[violence-linked slogan]. You people are next.” That is the language of a threat. Is is credible? Who knows? Rachel Powell, "Pink Hat Lady", was mother of eight children and a grandmother of six when she attacked our capital. She had a clean record prior to Jan. 6. Luigi Mangione had no police record before murdering someone. What does this tell us? Anyone, anyone, can commit a violent crime.
And that’s why I am glad that police follow up on any possible threat linked to and in the wake of a recent act of political violence.
2. When being investigated, don’t ever engage in conversation with the police without a lawyer present. The police are not prosecutors or judges. They are not about adjudicating an alleged offense. Their job is to determine if there is probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed, meaning: there is a reasonable basis for believing that a crime may have been committed and that the person being arrested is responsible for it.
Here, Brianna Boston told the police when asked, “Yes, I said “Delay, deny, depose. You people are next.” As far as the police are concerned, that’s probable cause that a crime may have been committed by Mrs. Boston. Her calling health insurance companies evil and that they deserve karma indicates she still thought, while the police were interviewing her, it was no big deal to say "Delay, deny, depose. You people are next."
She is wrong. It is a big deal. Just flip the target, pick your slogan and follow with “You people are next.”
“All Lives Matter. You people are next.”
“Free Palestine. You people are next.”
“We are the 99%. You people are next.”
“Stop the Steal! You people are next.”
