It is still early and the first intimations of the Ukrainians breaking out of their defensive salient in Kursk to go on a serious counteroffensive are coming from the Russian side. But now Ukrainian officials are beginning to slowly lift the op sec information black out just a tiny bit. Apparently this new movement by the Ukrainians once again caught the Russians off guard and things are going well for the Ukrainians. In the words of one of President Zelenskyi’s most senior aides, Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine's Presidential Office:
"Kursk region, good news, Russia is getting what it deserves,"
Andrii Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation shared that the new attack caught the Russians off guard.
"In Kursk, the Russians are deeply unsettled after being hit from multiple directions... The Defense Forces are in action” global.espreso.tv/…
This news comes on the heels of what appears to be a major shake up in the leadership of the Russian effort to push Ukraine out of Kursk. After the initial embarrassment of Ukraine’s early August incursion into Kursk wore off Putin decided to keep the leadership of the Russian counteroffensive to remove Ukraine as close to himself as he could. In an odd move he put the FSB(the KGB reborn) in charge, sidelining the mainline Russian military. On top of that he gave overall control of the effort to Aleksey Dyumin, a top politician, once Putin’s own favorite body guard who is often seen in some quarters as Putin’s successor-in-waiting.
It has not gone well. The Ukrainians quickly realized that they had to pull in their horns, firmly entrench in highly advantageous and defensible positions from which they can see attacking Russian formations well before they arrive. What some observers saw as Ukraine losing 40% of the land they previously held was in retrospect a very astute tactical move. The results of this move by the Ukrainians have been deadly for the Russians and their Chechen Akhmat and North Korean allies. Throw in the recent devastating Ukrainian long fires decapitation attacks on the leadership of the Russian force in Kursk and one can see how this snowball is beginning to start rolling downhill on top of the Russians.
News comes today that Putin has decided to change tack and put a regular army guy in charge over Kursk … General Yunus-Bek Yevkurov. The last time Yevkurov was prominently in the news was when Prigozhin and his Wagner PMC went on their abortive post-Bakhmut Thunder Run to Moscow. The first major Russian military outpost Prigozhin took over was the Russian Southern Command headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, at the time Yevkurov’s command. Yevkurov was famously seen sitting and chatting amiably with Prigozhin and General Alexyeev. Both men were reportedly arrested soon after Prigozhin aborted his run to Moscow at Voronezh. Yevkurov, unlike Surovikin, will soon re-emerge and be promoted to full Army General and somewhat of a Kremlin legate to help secure Wagner’s connections in Africa and elsewhere. Most of those countries, like Mali, Burkina, etc., are majority Moslem and ostensibly Yevkurov, a fellow Moslem, was the man for the job. A long serving army man, owner of the much coveted Hero of Russia medal and politician, the man from the restive Moslem republic of Ingushetia now has perhaps his toughest assignment yet … wrest Kursk from the Ukrainians. It won’t be easy. If at all.
As the Telegraph said in an article today:
By sending Gen Yevkurov to Kursk, Putin has shown his hand. Although it is still unclear how successful the Ukrainian counter-offensive will be, he is clearly worried(emphasis mine). www.telegraph.co.uk/...
