On immigration: heard this bit of red state Idaho local news on NPR and transcribed it. Reporter George Prentice interviewed Idaho state senator Ron Taylor (D-Hailey), who said
Immigration is going to be in the forefront this year. With the new coming administration in DC, Idaho needs to be prepared for the potential loss of their agricultural backbone which are the workers that are probably undocumented, the people who are looking to make a better life for themselves, who are willing to do the type of jobs that most Americans don't really want to do. There is concern about what's going to happen. People are already planning on contingency plans as to what happens if their children come home from school one day and they're not home because they've been deported. In Idaho we rely on agriculture and we rely on our foreign born people to work in that field. … In my opinion it would completely bankrupt the state of Idaho if we were to lose our agricultural sector. It is what keeps Idaho afloat. That threat is real.
Reporter Prentice notes that everyone he has talked to,
..not in the statehouse but in the ag community, are saying that deportation, or worse yet, the threat thereof, would dramatically hurt Idaho ag.
But as he said, that opinion is not necessarily held in the statehouse. The governor's website says
Governor Brad Little and 25 other Republican governors released a joint statement in support of President Trump’s commitment to address the illegal immigration crisis and ongoing threat to the safety of the American people.
ProPublica has a refreshingly realistic take on immigration issues in red state Wisconsin, where immigrants aren't engaging in crime, much less eating the dogs and cats, but they are having problems with driving.
New Arrivals: Over the past few years, several hundred immigrants from Nicaragua have arrived in the small Wisconsin city of Whitewater.
Over the past few years, several hundred immigrants from Nicaragua have arrived in the small Wisconsin city of Whitewater. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: Most of the Nicaraguan immigrants came to Whitewater for low-paying jobs in local factories, food-processing plants and egg farms — jobs employers were desperate to fill.
Most of the Nicaraguan immigrants came to Whitewater for low-paying jobs in local factories, food-processing plants and egg farms — jobs employers were desperate to fill. Political Upheaval: Former President Donald Trump said the city is a haven for “migrant crime,” but that’s untrue. Police say a big challenge has been immigrants driving without licenses.
Adam Kinzinger is still a Republican, but he says he’s closer to being a Democrat. He also predicts that Trumpism is nearing its end. (May that come soon!)
“The thing that surprised me most with this, and here’s a funny thing about the last couple of years, I’ve built these new alliances, like I’ve realized I’m probably closer to a Democrat now because of how the Republican Party has changed… The Democrats are now the party that’s defending America’s role in the world, defending Ukraine, which I’m really passionate about.’ “I think the Republican Party is toast for a while. Everything is a pendulum, and I honestly believe that Trumpism doesn’t survive past these four years. While I’m pissed Trump won, had he lost, I couldn’t have put an expiration date on Trumpism.” (The Hill)
In a Salon interview he adds:
What's interesting is, I get called a RINO, meaning “Republican in Name Only.” The reality is the entire Republican Party today is the RINO. They're Republicans in name only. They hold the title to the Republican Party, a lot of them still think they're holding a legacy, but that's exactly right, it's gone. The things that Republicans should be most proud of, they run away from. We were the party that freed the slaves. We were the party that built the interstate system. We were the party that believed in federal infrastructure. We believed in a small government, but with an important role for the federal government. We believe in a strong national defense. None of that exists today in the GOP. What does exist is culture war. (Salon)
A troubled American veteran blew up a Tesla cyber truck outside a Trump hotel on New Years Day. You knew that. But did you know that the truck was being tracked by the company, which gave data to the police? There are no laws protecting drivers’ privacy.
Many of the latest cars not only know where you’ve been and where you are going, but also often have access to your contacts, your call logs, your texts and other sensitive information thanks to cell phone syncing. (AP)
It’s not just Tesla, either.
General Motors, for instance, was sued in August by the Texas attorney general for allegedly selling data from 1.8 million drivers to insurance companies without their consent. (AP)
Alexander Vindman speaks out on the nomination of Kash Patel for FBI director:
Senate Majority Leader Thune on FBI Director nominee Patel on Meet the Press, was totally absurd. He claimed Patel understands the job of FBI Director. In fact, Patel is the least qualified, most dangerous nominee for that office we’ve ever had. If seated, Kash would be the minister of retribution. — Alexander S. A quarry worker in the UK notices a line of regular bumps in the rock and investigates. It’s the longest track of dinosaur footprints in the UK, from the Jurassic period, 166 million years ago.
And in other digs, researchers in Kenya have discovered a set of stone blades they call the “Oldowan tool kit.” At 3 million years old, they are roughly in the period of the hominid “Lucy.” They may not have been made by humans, though. Remains of paranthropus — a hominid not in our ancestral line — have been found in the area.
Prediction of volcanoes is not an exact science yet, but scientists studying an undersea volcano predict that the volcano offshore from Oregon will erupt in 2025.
More green technology advances: Smart window glass that can change shade or opacity to keep homes cooler in summer.
Most of the current versions on the market are what is known as electrochromic (EC), meaning they work by applying electricity at the touch of a button to layers of particles or crystals inside the glass. (Livescience)
Wonder what it will cost to replace electric car batteries when they wear out? Next generation batteries will last longer than the rest of the car.
Batteries with "single-crystal electrodes" could power electric vehicles (EVs) for millions of miles — meaning their batteries would outlast other parts of the cars, new research shows. A lithium-ion battery with this new type of electrode has been charging and discharging constantly for six years, retaining nearly 80% of its original capacity. That battery cycled eight times longer than a regular lithium-ion battery — equivalent to an electric car driving 5 million miles (8 million kilometers), researchers reported Nov. 15 in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society .
