According to a July 2023 Gallup survey, 62% of U.S. adults aged 18 and older drink alcohol. So folks know it’s harmful but drink anyway. We heard (but didn’t heed) admonitions about potential liver damage.
Any change to the beverage labels requires congressional authorization.
An update to federal dietary guidelines coming this year is expected to include new recommendations about how much alcohol people should drink.
Politics makes strange bedfellows. Alcohol has been under attack by Biden, a teetotaller. We just elected a different teetotaller, Trump, who might appoint a guy (RFK) who sees alcohol not as a delicious drink to have with dinner, but through the lens of addiction. But money talks, (in this case, Big Alcohol).
Will labels be effective? Early on, everybody knew cigarettes were poison. They were called coffin nails! And this rhyme was well known:
Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust.
If Fatimas don’t get you
Then the Camels must.
But as time passed, I believe the cigarette warning labels were effective. Will the alcohol labels prove effective?
