The World War II German Kubelwagen was a light military vehicle used as staff cars and as reconnaissance vehicles near the front lines. The Kubelwagen was based on the Volkswagen Beetle designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

The Kubelwagen has a top speed of 50 mph and a range of 280 miles. It has an air-cooled flat 4-cylinder engine.

The Kubelwagen on display in the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum in Everett, Washington is a three-place radio car. According to the Museum:

“The basic and tough machines were built with a simple, geometric form for ease of construction. The cars also had a flat underbody, allowing it to ‘sled’ over mud, snow, and sand rather than bogging down and vehicle’s air-cooled engine performed well in both hot and cold weather extremes.”
